BEGINNING RUNNERS CLINIC SET On Saturdays, in conjunction with the Saturday Fun Runs (see listing elsewhere) a beginning runners clinic will be held. The session, led by an experienced member will include stretching exercises and a group run of 1 to 2 miles. This will enable beginning runners (or others) to ask questions of the more experienced runners and will provide them with the same socia setting all members have, since the beginning runners clinic will finish at the same time as the regular Fun Run, and then on to the food! ~illMBERSHIP DIRECTORY IS OUT This week the first Front Runners, NY membership directory is being mailed to members. The directory provides information concerning individual member's running schedules so those who wish to do so, may contact others for training sessions. Any member who wishes to be listed in the directory must first fill out the membership questionnaire which can be received by requesting one from Bob Dubie at 242-4746. READ A GOOD BOOK LATELY? If so, we would like a copy of it if it deals with the subject of running. One of the best ways to learn what running is all about, and to improve your times,(if you race) is to read. With that in mind, Howard has volunteered to set up a Front Runners Library and needs copies of all those running books (no magazines please) you have stashed away. On a regular basis a lis of those books in stock will be distributed, and if you would like to borrow one, just let Howard know. Easy, right? Only if you give us your unwanted books, so do call Howard at 929-3746 to arrange for delivery. TEE SHIRTS AVAILABLE Front Runner, NY tee shirts are now available in red, grey, and tank top styles. Now that !;).utdoor activities are in full swing, Front Runners are encouraged (while, of course, eschewi~~paranoia) to run defensively . Cyclists, skaters, skateboarde rs, pedestrians , and other runners~ in addition to cars, present potential hazards. Particular care should be taken to look~both ways before crossing one-way streets. Running after sunset requires appropriate choices in both running route (for surface conditions) and clothing (for light-reflec ting capabilitie s). Let's watch out for ourselves and for each other. EXTRA-COURIER ACTIVITIES . From the conversatio n at post-Fun Run breakfasts and other social gatherings, it is obvious that Front Runners have a wide variety of interests which in the future might be shared. Possibiliti es include dancing, roller and ice skating, bowling, beach partying, picnicking, and attending movies, operas, concerts, plays, museums, and horseraces. GAY RUN 80--History was made this past July 27 when Gay Run 80 was held in San Francisco. It was sponsored by the Advocate and the local chapter of Front Runners. Our club was admirably represented in the lOK event by Bob Dubie and Malcolm Robinson, who placed 2nd and lOth respectively . In fact, though he struggled in the final third, Malcolm finished first among runners over 39. Bob's strong and steady pace enabled him to take over second when two of the four leaders dropped out. Both had impressive times: 35:02 for Bob and 37:07 for Malcolm. GAY OLYMPICS--Dave Waddell, a noted member of the 1964 Olympic team, has announced Gay Olympics 1983 which is tentatively set for San Ji'rancj sco. voi. f No. 4 INFORMATION PLEASE--We need your help to keep you better informed. PAWLING WEEKEND-Thanks to Bob Dubie's Eagle Scout leadership, a number of members enjoyed an athletic decompression weekend in Pawling, NY at the YMCA's Holiday Hills. New York's cosmopolitan Front Hunners took advantage of the countryside with a fun run on Saturday and an 8.2 mile ~ace on Sunday. Racers completed the course in a cold rain with Bob Dubie placing a very impressive fourth. Hopefully more members will make the trip in 1981. SAN FRANCISCO VISITORS-Bob Plantz and George Fischer, president and vicepresident of S.F. Front Runners, were our guests over the Labor Day weekend. On Saturday they ran with the group and shared ipformation about their club during breakfast. Members planning a trip to the coast are sure to be welcomed by the Bay City organization.
