One of the first change s put into effec t was droppi ng the East River fun runs. Starti ng in Janua ry, 1981, the runs were moved to Centr al Park, altern ating betwee n starti ng at Tavern .On The Green and 90th St and 5th Ave. It was also felt that we should have a regula r place to go for break fast after the run, and where we could also drop off a bag before the run. Jim Johnso n sugge sted a restau rant on W 72nd St, the Dakot a, and madex a reserv ation for us. It was perfe ct for our needs. They had a large dining room in the back which they didn' t use in the mornin gs, so we had the room to ourse lves. ~'le had one large table, which could be added to if needed , so everyo ne could sit togeth er. It was a great way to socia lize and become a good means of making announ cemen ts. The club had ended 1980 with 42 membe rs and from 10-20 were showin g up for the Saturd ay runs. In order to attrac t new membe rs, we placed our runnin g sched ule in bars, health clubs , Ys, etc and listed our numbe r with the Gay Switc hboard. On Janua ry 21, we had our first month ly busine ss meetin g, whi€h I had announ ced in the Januar y newsl etter and at the break fasts. The meetin g drew a grand total of 4 people , Guy, Treas urer Ron Kirche m, Newsl etter Edito r Hicha el Coope r and mysel f. This was my first clue that we weren 't going to be inunda ted with volun teers to do club work. Never theles s,. we discus sed club busin ess, includ ing the result s of the questi onnai re, the articl es for the Febru ary newsl etter, and set the date of the next busine ss meetin g for Wedne sday, Feb 18, at Nicha el Cooper -S in Soho. That night, about 10 people showed up for the run on the old West side High\v ay, follow ed by dinne r at the fabulo us Tiffan ys on Sherid an square , and then on to Micha el's for the meetin g. W~ It had been decide d that we should expand our runnin g sched ule, so it was announ ced that we 1.rould be adding a specia l run on one Sunday each month , to be held in differ ent parts of the city. Also announ ced was our first long run, a 10 or 20 miler , schedu led for Sunda y, Harch 22. sue Foste r did a specia l flyer, which was mailed with the Narch newsl etter, descri bing the route and the brunch to' follow , which Bob and I were to host. Also discus sed xxxxXh R were the result s of the questi onnai re, highli ghted by the findin gs that the membe rship wanted runnin g clinic s to be held, a second regula r fun run to be added and that club membe rs and teams should ~~a offici ally compe te in races. We talked about club publi city and a numbe r of other matte rs, and set the next busine ss meetin g for Wedne sday, March 25 at Ron Kirche m's. All in all a very satisf actor y meetin g with a good feelin g of accom plishm ent. With membe rship starti ng to grmv again , we were gettin g from 20-30 people at the fun runs. The March newsl etter was full of announ cemen ts about all of our upcom ing new activ ities. I was becom ing confid ent that the club was now moving in the right direct ion.
