Front Runners NY, a running club for gay men and lesbians, was
founded in October 1979, and the initial group of nine members
has grown to more than 200. The club meets every Saturday
morning and Wednesday evening for a fun run of up to 5 miles,
as well as special Sunday fun runs and long runs. All runs are
free and open to the public and beginners and new runners are
encouraged to join.

Under the club bylaws, officers are elected once a year, and
business is conducted at an open meeting held on the last
Wednesday of each month. Dues paying members receive a
monthly schedule of runs, a newsletter that reviews
club activities and special events, and a membership directory.

Front Runners compete individually and on teams in races
throughout the year. Some recent highlights have been a 10 man
team entry in a 24 hour relay race, and 26 members completing
the 1981 NYC Marathon. In addition to running, members meet
socially for holiday and special parties, potluck dinners, cultural
events and occasional weekend trips.

By Patricia Nell Warren
Author of The Front Runner
Brothers and sisters of the Front Runners athletic club sponsoring this
race-officials-contestants -spectators1 deeply appreciate the invitation of the club to be here today and start
this race, and I deeply regret my inability to be here. But I am here with
you in spirit as you toe the line.
All of us have been in the race all our lives. We jumped off the line
when we were born, and that race will not end until we fall fainting into
our deaths. All of us here today have been running all our lives,
straining every fiber, racing to stay ahead of institutions and people in
the world who seek to enslave the human mind and heart ... who seek
to make us all live in fear, so that they can control our lives and our
efforts. Staying ahead of these institutions, these would-be controllers, is
the effort that we all are making. We are all front runners.
But this race also happens within our own minds, our own hearts. Our
higher selves are racing to stay ahead of our own fears, our own
doubts. Fear and doubt are the weapons of institutions and people who
deny the complexity of all creation, of human life and the human spirit.
They seek to stir up fear and doubt within us-but only if we allow them
to do so. If we stay ahead of them, if we keep our eyes on the treasures
that wait ahead, they cannot harm us, no matter what they do.

Through spirit, all humanity races with us today. And through the efforts
of this race, we are present at thousands-millions-of races elsewhere
in the world. We are all one through the collective spirit of humanity
everywhere. Your pride, and your self respect, reaches and touches
people who need your help elsewhere, people who are struggling with
their own fears and doubts.
So on your marks, everybody. And try to imagine me standing here with
the starting pistol in my hand' Even though I am in California working on
the next stage of my own personal race, I am with you today through
that single spirit of humanity. Brave and beautiful runners, I salute you.
