Front Runners NY and the New York Native welcome you

to the second annual Gay Pride Run. It is anticipated that Gay
Pride Run will continue to be an important part of the Gay &
Lesbian Pride Week activities and the New York running
scene.
The defending Gay Pride Run '82 champions and race record
holders are Remulus Delle Valle of Millrose Athletic Club who
finished in 25:13 and Susan Foster of Front Runners NY who
completed the course in 31 :49.
Front Runners NY, a running club for gay men and lesbians,
was founded in October 1979, and the initial group of nine
members has grown to more than 350. The club meets every
Saturday morning and Wednesday evening for a fun run of up
to five miles, as well as special Sunday fun runs and long
runs.
Under the club bylaws, officers are elected once a year, and
club business is conducted at an open meeting held on the
last Wednesday of each month. Dues paying members
receive a monthly schedule of runs, a newsletter that reviews
club activities and special events, and a membership
directory.

Front Runners compete individually and on teams in races
throughout the year. 23 members of the club completed the
1982 NYC Marathon, 15 coed teams entered the Trevira
Twosome, and 11 members competed in Gay Games I in San
Francisco. In addition to running, members meet socially for
holiday and special parties, potluck dinners, cultural events
and occasional weekend trips to visit Front Runners clubs in
other cities.

Dear Front Runners and The New York Native:

Congratulations to you for sponsoring Gay Pride Run '83.
When I read your attractive race entrance application, I was particularly
thrilled to see such items as "with cooperation of the New York City Department
of Parks and Recreation and the New York Road Runners Club" and "Course is
certified and TAC sanctioned," but what struck me most was the line that read
"OPEN TO EVERYONE."
I applaud you for g~v~ng credence to the fact that the gay movement, shaken
from inertia by the Stonewall Riots in 1969, has indeed moved. The words
"Open" and "Cooperation" should serve us well, and it would certainly be
encouraging to believe that those words might characterize the movement
throughout the 80's and beyond.
As I looked over the map of the course to be used for the Run, I began
remembering the same route when I lived in New York. I was competing for the
New York Athletic Club, and a portion of the course can be viewed from their
magnificent facility on Central Park South.

lmmer streben.

I tried to imagine such a race taking place back in those closeted days, and
I concluded that it probably would have been a Stonewall of its own.
I wondered
whether I would have joined the race.
But here we are today, and it is happening:
of our identity and our visibility.

I view Gay Pride Run '83 in New York and the Gay Games in San Francisco as
pursuing parallel directions and realiz~ that through these events we have
uncovered the great potential of athlet~c participation as an expansive
statement on the quality of our lives. What better way to share our selfawareness!
Best wishes to everyone in Gay Pride Run

Your First Race?

co~~u/':

by Eddie Coyle, New York Dally News

_{

So this is your first 5-mile run. The
most important thing to remember
is go out easy. Once you get over
the pre-race jitters the adrenalin is
likely to make you feel stronger
and you might try to keep up a
faster early pace than you should.
Don't make the mistake so many
newer runners and experienced
ones, too make of trying to stick
with people that are too fast for
you.

7

If you decide to run with a training
partner or another newcomer, fine.
However, make an agreement
beforehand that if one or the other
feels the pace is either too slow or
too fast you wi11 run your own race.
You'll stay friends that way (You
won't be resenting one another's
too fast or too slow pace) and
you'll also have an evenly-run and
more successful race.
It's wise not to eat for at least three
hours before the race and then
something light and easily digestible. Load up (that doesn't mean
pig out, though) on carbohydrates
two or three days beforehand. And
despite what you hear about name
runners' predeliction for junk food,
you'll be stronger with fruits than
cookies. and you don't have to load
up to the extent of someone
running a marathon. Five miles
won't deplete even the newer
runner that much.
Drink water at least half an hour
beforehand and leave yourself
enough time to hit the Port-o-San
before the starting horn goes off.
Take water at every water stop
whether you're thirsty or not. The
odds are it will be a comparatively
warm running day this time of year
and dehydration can be one of the

biggest enemies of runners. You
don't have to drink it all; you can
throw some over your head, too.
Fold the lip of the cup so water
won't fall out if you want to sip as
you run a ways.
The Central Park hills can be
tough. If you're a new racer and
are starting to feel tired after 3 or 4
miles there's no law against
slowing down or even walking the
Cat Hill (72nd & the East Side,
about a mile from the finish) or the
other hills. The recovery period
might make you finish stronger
than you would otherwise. Set
yourself intermediate goals along
the course. That helps psychologically to make the distance seem
less formidable.
Get a very good night's sleep two
days before the race to insure
you're reasonably rested. You
might be hyper and have trouble
sleeping the night immediately
before it.
With these precautions you should
finish your first five-miler in
reasonably good shape. Time isn't

important in your first race.
Finishing it is what counts. If you
don't then you still have your first
race to finish. Then it could provide
a springboard to heavier training,
added mileage and a greater
enjoyment of running.
Enjoy and easy does it.

On the Run
by Susan Foster
Women's Vice President, FRNY

As the '83 version of the Gay Pride
Run approaches, it's difficult for me
to remember back to the old days.
Those were the times when a
Saturday morning fun run would
consist of possibly 5-1 0 people and
as the run ended we would have
the tough decision of where to
have brunch. Now, of course, we
average 50 or so Front Runners
each week and our size severely
limits our choice of restaurants. I
also can remember how I became
resigned to the fact that I was to
be the "token lesbian" of the club. I
wasn't completely discouraged by

II~
\_J

such a distinction, however. I had
faith that the lesbian community
would come to realize the value of
the Front Runners organization.
Well, it has taken a bit of time, but I
think I can safely say that at any
given run, you will find a noticeable
number of women. We may still be
in the minority, but our liveliness
helps make up for our lack in
numbers. Some lesbians may be
slightly put off by the teeming
masses of men in the club, but I
can't think of a more supportive
group of men. The guys in this club
go out of their way to insure that all
women feel welcome. I can
personally attest to many of our
members' cheerleading abilities.
They have helped push me
through numerous finishing
stretches.
I am encouraged by the large
number of women already entered
in this year's race and I hope it will
result in an influx of new faces at
upcoming fun runs. In any case, I
hope you havE: a good Gay Pride
Run.
