Front Runners New York was founded in 1979 to promote running as a sport among gay men and lesbians,
and the initial group of nine members has grown to
almost 400. FRNY is the largest of the Front Runner
organizat ions in the United States, as well as one of the
largest lesbian and gay groups in the New York Metropol itan area.
The club offers a variety of activities. Fun runs of 1-5
miles are schedule d in Manhatta n every Saturday morning and every Wednesd ay evening. These fun runs are
noncomp etitive and informally divide into all running
paces. Special runs are organized on two Sundays each
month. Generally exploring some new region of the
metropol itan area, these runs are from 4 to 20 miles.
Running clinics for beginners and experien ced runners
are conducte d free of chflrge to members. These classes
concentra te on basic form, hill work, speed, and stamina.
Social functions include gathering for a meal after each
run, parties, theatre outings, and trips to other Front
Runner clubs.

As lesbians and gay men, we run a great many races in our
lives. Far too many of those races are run not in pursuit of
something, but away from something; from bigotry, from fear,
from the homophobia which, unwonted, plays so major a part
in our everyday lives. And when we run from these realities in
our lives, we become part of a conspiracy of invisibility
surrounding our community.
That is why it is so important that we run today. For it is an
opportunity to run open and free, symbolically but also
simply as people enjoying people, people engaged in
competition. Equally important, it is an opportunity for people
outside our community experience to learn, in the face of
relentless stereotyping, that our joys, our exhilaration, our
victories and defeats are human emotions shared by all.
I wish all the Gay Pride Run '84 participants a healthy, safe
and joyous run. Today we are running toward something, not
away from it. That is something we can do every day of our
lives.

A Tale of Two Races
by Jim Schmidt, Race Director,
Gay Pride Run '84
As Gay Pride Run '84 approaches,
it's difficult for me to rememb er a
time when I wasn't preoccu pied
with race preparations. But, given a
moment to think, I can clearly recall
last year's race.
Heading towards Central Park for
my first Gay Pride Run, I was a
novice runner and a first time racer.
My previous night's sleep was
restless, and I had no idea what to
expect of the event (A photogr apher from Newsweek?) or what to
anticipate in terms of my own performance (Would I finish? Would I
finish last?).
Arriving at the starting area, I observed the pre-race activity I have
now come to expect. There were
eager looking runners jogging in
place, and worried looking runners
waiting to use the Port-O-Sans.
Latecomers were looking for the
baggage check, and the encouraging race announc er was urging runners to stretch. Contrary to my
expectation, the race started exactly on time. With the blast of a
horn a great cheer went up and
the race was underway. A pack of
800 gay men, lesbians, and other
supportive (or competi tive) runners were off and running.
A strange combina tion of enthusiasm and naivete resulted in my
fastest first mile ever. With such a
fast start, the West Drive was endless and the southern loop seemed
much longer than the three blocks
shown on the map. After choking
at the first water stop, I discovered
that I couldn't run and drink at the
same time. At the second water
stop I found that it helps to just
pour the cup over my head. At the
Museum Hill I paid for my fast start,
now being certain that I had been
passed by every runner in the race
and wonderi ng if I could even finish.
Feeling my legs turn to stone, I still
managed to keep one foot moving
in front of the other and made it
over the top of the steepest hill in
the course. Hoping that the worst
was over, I headed into the last
mile.
At that moment , from the side
of the roadway, someone was urging repente nce and advocating a
change in lifestyle (Given the way I
felt, I thought , perhaps, he was
correct) . However, with a half-mile
to go there was a spectato r who
singled out each runner for special
encouragement. '1\lmost there! You
look great!" was the cheer for me.
Anticipa ting the finish, I began to
feel better, although my pace had
nearly slowed to a walk. Turning
onto the straight-a-way, I spotted
the FINISH banner, saw the crowd,
and heard the cheers. Almost involuntarily, my legs started to move
faster, and I smiled for the first time
since the start. From that point on,
no one passed me, and I finished
with a surprisingly strong kick. It's
hard for me to imagine feeling better if I had, in fact, won the race.
Since last June, there have been
several more races, better times,
faster finishes, and larger crowds.
But there has never been a race so
special, a finish so memorable, or a
crowd so supportive.
For me, the end of last year's race
was just the beginning of my involvement in this year's Gay Pride
Run. With the help of dozens of
volunteers, planning has been underway since January and efforts
intense since April. Not unlike the
j
I Fifth
race itself, prepara tions for the race
had an enthusiastic start, a seemingly endless middle stretch of
details, and what appears to be an
exubera nt finish.
This year, it gives me a special satisfaction to help set the stage for those
runners who, like myself last year,
are among us for the first time. As
race director, I'll be at the finish
line, in the compan y of friends and
my fellow Front Runners, to cheer
them as they complet e this, their
most importa nt race.
