BENEFIT RUN
Saturday, October

5, 1985, 10:00 AM

Sponsored by Front Runners NY
NOTE TO SPONSORS: This Benefit Run is being sponsored by FRNY to raise
money for various organizations in our community. All money pledged will
be distributed to one or more of the organizations that you select from
the list below. Your check is to be made out directly to the organization
you select, & you may take the tax deduction where appropriate, so please
be as generous as you can. The runner will collect your pledge from you
as soon as possible after the run.
INSTRUCTIONS TO THE RUNNER: Each runner is asked to get as many sponsors
as possible to pledge a specific amount of money per mile run. The
distance run during the run, multiplied by the pledged amount per mile,
will determine each sponsor's donation. Of cqurse, the more people you
sign up as sponsors, & the more miles you run; the larger the total amount
raised. You can ask friends, relatives, co-workers & even yourself to .
pledge. You can leave the choice of the organizations, made from the list
below, to each sponsor, or you can suggest that you would like the money
to go to one or more of your choice. The determination of how many, &
which organization or organizations you choose, is up to you & your sponsors:
The run will start in Central Park at 10:00 AM from Tavern On the Green,
67th St & Central Park West. The distance you run is optional but, '
obviously, the more the better. There is no minimum or maximum mileage
or time, so the run is open to all, from beginners on. The runners &
spectators will picnic after the run in the Sheep Meadow, so bring
something to eat. If, for some reason, you can't make it that day, you
can still participate by telling your sponsors that you are doing your
run on another day.
You are responsible for collecting all of your pledges after the run.
Checks should be made out directly to the organizations selected, not
to Front Runners NY. When you have collected all your pledges, either
mail them, along with this form, to the club address, or you may bring
them to any fun run. Do not mail them to the organizations. All checks
will then be sorted & distributed to the appropriate organizations by
FRNY. Please try to collect your pledges as quickly as possible.

                    <text>FRONT RUNNERS NY
BOX 363, VILLAGE STATION, NEW YORK, NY 10014

Dear Member:
Welcome to Front Runners New York! Named after a book
entitled "The Front Runner," about a gay track star, our club
was founded in 1979 and has grown to over 400 members. Here's
what the club has to offer you:
Membership Packet: Enclosed are your membership card, the
current newsletter and schedule of runs, and a membership
directory.
Monthly Newsletter and Schedule of Runs: Every month
you'll receive the club's newsletter and schedule of runs. Read
it, and you'll be up-to-date on all FRNY activities. Editor
Michael Cooper, 436 West Broadway #14L, 212 966-3642, welcomes
articles submitted by club members. The 15th of each month is
the submission date required for articles in the subsequent
month's newsletter.
Fun Runs: Front Runners sponsors two regular runs each
week in Central or Riverside Parks in Manhattan and two special
runs each month throughout the metropolitan area. Saturday runs
begin at 10:00 a.m., and Wednesday runs, at 7:00p.m. After
each run, the group gathers at local restaurants for a meal.
The location of the fun runs, the special runs, and the
after-workout meal is included in the monthly schedule of runs
mailed to each member.
If you're a beginning or inexperienced
runner, a more experienced club member will run with you. Ask
the officer in charge of the run for more information.
If you have a favorite run of 5-15 miles you'd like to
share with the club, we encourage you to call Special Runs
Chairperson Howard Kessler, 212 873-0517, to schedule the event.
Racing: Every month, Race Captains Dan Del Monte and
Julie Kelm select one or two races that the club members are
encouraged to enter. Additionally, there are numerous races
that individual Front Runners enter throughout the year.
If you
enter races, we urge you to wear the club racing singlet. Call
Dan (212 496-7662) or Julie (212 666-0004) before the 15th of
each month to report your race results for the club newsletter.
Social Events and Special Programs: Nearly every month,
FRNY sponsors some sort of event for its members. Social
Chairperson Bruce Bates (718 685-5885) is responsible for
planning parties, theatre outings, and trips to other Front
Runners clubs. Details are announced at runs and in the
newsletter. Guy Zelenak (718 278-8280) arranges the running
clinics, which include hill work, speed training, and building
stamina.
Club Clothing: Club clothing such as t-shirts, racing
singlets, and sweatjackets is available for sale to the
membership at fun runs and through mail order. See the
newsletter for details.

Gay Pride Run: Each June, Front Runners sponsors Gay
Pride Run, a five-mile race in Central Park, attracting runners
from all over the country. With the massive amount of work
necessary to coordinate this first class event, preparations
start in January, and volunteers are needed in all aspects of

entering the race, contact Race Director Jim Skofield (212

only. The list may not be used for any purpose other than
official club activities.
Discounts: Several businesses, including running apparel
stores, offer discounts to Front Runners upon presentation of
the club membership card. A listing of the businesses
participating in this program appears periodically in the
newsletter.
