BOX 363, VILLAGE STATION, NEW YORK, NY 10014

April 20, 1986
Dear Friend of the Community:
Front Runners New York was organized in 1979 as a running club for Gay
men and Lesbians and has grown to over 400 members.
On June 28, 1986
Front Runners New York and the New York Native will sponsor the fifth
annual Gay Pride Run, a five mile race in Central Park. The 1986 race
will be conducted with the cooperation of the New York Road Runners
Club and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation.
The annual Gay Pride Run has become an important part of the New York
City running scene and Gay Pride Week. Front Runners continues to enlarge the Run's visibility.
Over 1000 runners and spectators are
anticipated.
The race entry fees, which are kept low to encourage runner
participation, cover only a portion of the race. Additional funds are
needed to help cover the remaining costs.
It is for this reason we
are asking you to participate in Gay Pride Run '86.
There are several ways in which you can suppport the Gay Pride Run:
* As a PROGRAM ADVERTISER your ad in the Official Race
program will be produced and distributed to run
volunteers, spectators, and 1000 runners.
* As a CONTRIBUTING ADVERTISER your own promotional item
and/or one piece of literature will be enclosed in the
Runner's kit given to all run participants.
* As a PRIZE DONOR you are invited to donate prizes which
are given to race participants at a merchandise drawing
immediately following the run.
* As a CONTRIBUTOR your donations are welcome and listed
according to your wishes in the Official Race program.
Please take a moment of your time to discover the ways in which you
may show your support for Gay Pride Run '86 and for Front Runners New
York.
Please examine the enclosed SPONSOR KIT and decide how your
business can assist us.
Last year's program in enclosed for your perusal.
If you have any
questions please feel free to contact me at 212-340-9097.
We hope you will join us by participating in the fifth annual running
of the only Gay-sponsored race in New York City.
Sincerely yours,
FRONT RUNNERS NEW YORK

Front Hunners New York was founded in 1979 to promote running as a
sport among gay men and lesbians. The initial group of nine members has
grown to almost 450. FRNY is the largest of the Front Runner organizations in the United States, as well as one of the largest lesbian and gay
groups in the New York metropolitan area.
The club offers a variety of activities. l''un runs of 1-5 miles are scheduled in Manhattan every Saturday n10rning and Wednesday evening. These
runs are non-competitive and divide informally into all running paces.
Beginners are welcome and, if desired, are individually coached on their
first few runs by rnore experienced runners. Speeial runs are organized
on two Sundays each rntmth. These runs are held throughout the metropolitan region and range from 4 to 15 miles. Bunning clinics for all ranges
of runners, frmn beginner·s to advanced competitors, are conducted at a

A Short History oi the Gay Pride Run
Jim Skofield, Race Director
Fifth Annual Gay Pride Run

An anniversary is a time of celebration and

anticipation. We celebrate the duration of
a person or event over a period of years,
and in so doing, we anticipate the future
celebrations which stretch out before us.
On this fifth anniversary running of the
Gay Pride Run, we have much to anticipate and be grateful for: a large and growing field of cmnpetitive racers; a broad base
of support from the metropolitan running
community as a whole; a dedicated race
co-sponsor; and long-tenn commitments
from two rnajor corporate financial underwriters. As we savor and celebrate what
is, and what is to come, let us also take
the time to reflect on our past history.
The Gay Pride Hun was born on a blustery winter's Saturday in December of 1981,
as Race Director ('82, '83) Bill Beenhouwer
recalls. "We had gone over to Jerry's (McNeely) apartn1ent after the run and
breakfast. A runner fron1 San Francisco
was present, and he was telling us about a
gay-sponsored race which they had been
producing for a few years. We began to
talk about what such a race would mean
to the New York gay community. A few days
later, the Gay Pride Hun came into being
and I became its first race director." Bill
pauses. "I think I got it by default; no one
else wanted to do it!"
That first year was difficult and all the
learning was done frmn scratch. There
were so many things to attend to! Parks
pern1its, insurance coverage; advertising,
printing costs ... the list was never-ending.
The New York Hoad Hunners Club cordially
if warily agreed to lend their finish-line
equipment. Guy Zelenak quickly established himself as a dynamo in the recruilrnent and training of race volunteers. But
the workload was exhausting, a condition

echoed by then-President Steve Gerben
who remembers thinking, "what have we
gotton ourselves into'?'' in the last busy days
before the race. But all the hard workpaid
off when June 26 dawned bright and clear
(and hot) and 370 runners (85 of them
women) toed the starting line. Remulus
Delle Valle of Millrose A.A. won that first
Gay Pride Run in a blistering 25:13 (a race
record which was to stand for three years)
and New York Front Runner Susan Foster
won the women's division (two minutes
in front of the next finisher) in 31:49. And
the race was a roaring success!
Bill Beenhouwer served as the race's director in '8:-l, also, when the field doubled
to 689 participants and the race budget
grew to over $10,000. For the first time that
year, the race published a Haec Program
under the able chairmanship of Joel Ifcher,
and Jon Livingston took responsibility for
the first year of what was to be a threeyear tenure as Graphics Director. Hal Goolman of the Greenery running club won
that year's race in 2G:39, while Susan Foster set a new women's race rc>cord in 30:05.
Jim Schmidt served as Haec Director for
thf) '84 Gay Pride Hun. Under his guidance,
the race began what proved to be a highly
successful campaign to attract out-of-town
runners to the event, and to solidify the
base of support it enjoyed as a star attraction of New York City's Gay Pride Weekend. Jim expresses it well: "Because ofthe
race, and the preparation for it over the
preceding months, we were constantly reminded that this weekend is special, and
part of it belongs uniquely to us." '84 also
marked the year that Soho Natural Soda
was enjoyed at the finish-line by the 761runner field. BMTC's Louie Orazem led the
men's field with his 25:3G win, while the

amazing Susan Foster again lowered the
women's race record with her 29:27 win
... a record which still holds today.
By 1985, the Gay Pride Run had grown
to 955 participants (over a third of whom
were women) and was budgeted at over
$15,000. The workload had grown proportionately, and Hace Director Jim Skofleld
formed the first Gay Pride Hun Task Force
to help cope with it, creating, in the process, the position of Race Technical Director which was ably executed by Bob Brins.
T.J. Storch took on the responsibility of
producing the Hace Program. Building on
the foundations laid by the two previous
Race Directors, ilie '85 Task Force was able
to secure major financial underwriting for
the first time in the form of two $1,000
grants from two corporations: Christopher
Street Financial, Inc., and American Natural Beverage Corp. (makers of Soho Natural Soda). '85 also saw a new rnen's race
record set with Hichard McNally (Warren

StreetS. &.A.C.) and his 25:05 runaway victory, while-for the first time-an out-oftowner in the form of Philadelphia Front
Runners' Cheryl Wallace took the women's race in 30:00, narrowly edging threetime winner Susan Foster in a thrilling,
last-mile duel.
Now we are five and still growing. This
year's 1ask Force has swelled to eleven people, new & old, women & men. A record
number of racers will run the five mile
course on June 28. Some of then1 will be
seasoned, five-year veterans; others will be
racing for the first time. All of them will
experience the pleasure and satisfaction
of running in this unique event. And who
can say where the Gay Pride Hun will be
in the future? Only one element is certain:
each runner, whether he or she is running in the tenth, twentieth, or fiftieth annual Gay Pride Hun, will carry one special
element with him or her ... PmDE.
Let it grow.

Peace; come away: the song of woe
Is after all an earthly song.
Peace; come away: we do him wrong
To sing so wildly: let us go.
Yet in these ears, till hearing dies,
One set slow bell w iII seem to toll
The passing of the sweetest soul
That ever look'd with human eyes.
