(_f}jJ)/!Jd. ~@.&~ L.t!.._{?:J

We have received your 1988 application for club membership in
The Athletics Congress from your local association. And although
many of you have been club members of TAC/USA in the past, some
clubs are joining for the first time. Therefore, we will detail
the benefits of club membership in The Athletics Congress on the
National Level.
First, the club receives a copy of the 1988 Directory and the
1988 Competition Rules for Athletics. These books are shipped
under separate cover. The club also receives a subscription to
TAC's newsletter, The Record and Track Technique.
Enclosed with this letter is your club certificate. The
number on the certificate is a control number for the National
Office purposes and is not your club number. Your club number is
assigned by your Association and if you have any questions
regarding your club number, you should contact your Association.
As a member club of The Athletics Congress, the club is a
named insured on the Comprehensive General Liability policy owned
by The Athletics Congress. If you would like to have more
information on this policy, please request it in writing from the
National Office. Your request should be on the club's letterhead
and the certificate number should be on the letter. Also, if you
want a certificate of insurance for club practices, you need to
contact your Association. The fee for this certificate is $15.00.
In addition to the above, many Associations have newsletters.
You may wish to contact your Association regarding this.
Should you have any further questions about your club's
membership in The Athletics Congress, please contact the National
Office at the above address or phone number.

CONFERENCE SESSIONS You will have the opportunity to attend four (4) of the concurrent sessions offered during the
conference. Each session will be approximately 45 minutes in length . From the list attached, indicate on your registration
form wh ich four (4) sessions you wish to attend. Also, please choose two (2) altematives just in case we can't accommodate
your preferred selections. In addition, there will be two plenary sessions that will cover the various clubs' activities,
participation in Gay Games Ill, a parade of running gear, and a description of what's ahead for International Frontrunners.
Your registration form should be in New York by September 30, at the latest.
HOUSING Front Runners New York will attempt to house with its members the first 100 registrants for the International
Frontrunners Convention. We have asked our members to house IFR registrants beginning on Friday, October 7, and ending
on Monday, October 10. If you wish to stay longer in NYC, please make your own arrangements for the dates other than
October 7-10. You will be notified by mail or phone of your host's name, address, and telephone numbers. Alternatively, you
may want to stay in one of the hotels or guest houses listed later in this registration packet. If you do not yet have your
transportation information , please send in your Housing request form anyway. Provide your arrival information to us as soon
as possible so that your host will know at what time to expect you. Housing forms must be received in New York by

Conference attendee (or the companion of an attendee) to be hosted by FRNY.

tips. This session will cover race selection, setting a real istic training schedule, diet, psychological preparation , racing strategy, overcoming the 'wall ,'
and recovery.
102 The Tortoise and the Hare-Racing Strategy. This class covers strategies from track events to a half-marathon . Topics will include training , diet ,
hydration , starting line positioning, positive affirmations, speed/distance strategies, overcoming fatigue, psychology of racing, finish line 'kick,' and
recovery.
103 Pounds of Prevention and Pounds of Cure. This must-attend session is on injury prevention and treatment. We'll cover procedures for reduc ing
your chances of injury, early warning danger signals, preliminary self-diagnosis, home treatments, recognizing when a doctor is needed, choosing the
right d octor, physi cai therapy, and reiurr~ i ng to the road.
104 Up and Down, Real Fast-Speed and Hills. Learn how to speed up your running through self-coaching, ' buddy' running , track techniques, and
teamworkouts. If anything but a flat surface feels like 'Heartbreak Hill' to you, this class will give you techniques for running up and down those hills.
105 Crisis Management-Club Response to AIDS. This panel discussion will first focus on deciding whether or not to establish special response
groups within the club. If a group is established , what should they do? How much or how little will they duplicate social services groups and AIDS
support groups? Do you help the 'worried well'? What about AIDS fundraising? What are the women's roles in dealing with AIDS? Members from FR
clubs across the country will describe their group's strategies.
106 Women's Issues-For Women Only. Led by women for women, this session will cover issues such as speed vs. endurance capacity, the effect of
intense training on hormone levels, runn ing during the menstrual cycle, running alone and self-defense, recruiting other women to run with FRs, and
dealing with being the only woman at a fun run , as well as the personal issues brought for discussion by the attendees at this session .
107 Not for Women Only. Many clubs are enthusiastic about increasing the number of women who participate actively. This session will feature a panel
from clubs with both successes and failures in regard to recru iting women . The objective of this session is to generate new strategies for integrating your
club into one active, athletic group-not two separate cliques under the FR name.
108 Here's the Rub-Sports Massage. This 'hands-on' session will show you how to relieve those tired aching feet-by yourself or with a partner. The
therapeutic benefits of massage are enormous. You 'lllearn techniques to speed healing of injuries, to relax tension, and to just plain feel good. Bring
shorts and a t-shirt for this session.
109 Fueling the Body-Nutrition for Runners. You know those french fries are not what the qoctor ordered , but do you know what you should be
eating? We'll review the basics, including the definition of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates . . and what foods contain them . We'll cover watching
ou
cholesterol and percentage of body fat. Y 'll find out how to eat well and healthy at home and in restaurants-and we're not just talking alfalfa sprouts.
What about special diets: vegetarian and macrobiotic, among others? As a runner, should I concentrate on one particular food group? How should my
nutrition change during long-distance training? Should I 'carbo-load' one or two days (or both) before rac ing? Keep a detailed record (and we mean
everything) of what you ate the week before this conference for analysis during this session.

110 Ready, Set . Stretch Before You Go. We talk and talk about stretching , yet how many of us actually do it? You 'lllearn what muscles are being

August 29 to October 3, 1988 (6 weeks)
Mondays at 6:45 pm
Instructor: Cliff Pauling, Front Runner Coach
CLASS OBJECTIVES
This class is designed to prepare you for the International Front Runners Track
and Field Invitational meet on October 9 to be held at Downing Stadium on
Randalls Island. Events will range from 100 meters to 10 kilometers. Instruction will include starting (blocks and standing), form, technique, and strategy,
as well as baton-passing in relays. Individualized critiques will be provided.
Class will be divided into groups based upon competition distance. New runners
will be provided with the basics in track running.
EQUIPMENT
All running will be performed in training shoes with a few opportunities to run
in spiked running shoes. If you don't own spikes and intend to use them for the
meet, purchase them at least two weeks before the end of the class in order to
break them in properly. A set of starting blocks will be available together
with batons used in the relays.
CLASS LOCATION AND TIME
Classes will be conducted every Monday from 6:45 pm to 7:45 pm for six weeks at
the 6th Street track located on the east side of the East River Drive at 6th
Street.
There are no changing facilities, so come dressed to run. Since we
want to spend our time qualitatively; allow time prior to the class for adequate
stretching and warmup.
CLASS FEE AND SIZE
Class fee is $36.00 for the six week session.
Please send this application
(separated at the dotted line) and your check to: Front Runners NY, PO Box 363,
Village Station, New York, NY 10014.
Payment is required before the first
class. Refunds will be given until September 4. No credit can be given towards
future classes.
