                    <text>RACER OF THE MONTH

~

Sue Foster

Our fastest female Front Runner, though just 32, Sue Foster is one of the club's
11
0ldest 11 members. While her race times and distance goals have tapered over her
dozen years of running, one thing has stayed the same; her love of running and
of FRNY. Sue started running i.n 1976 to stay in shape for college basketball and
subsequently found she was better at running. One year later, she ran~,;n her:!native New
Orlean •s 11 Mardi Gras Marathon~'' 'Four years --and eleven marathons wiser, Sue
bpted:out of #13; ~ her sub,...3 ... hour best and segued into middle distances.
From ten to a half ... marathon, later Sue found her best potential at four miles to 10K.
One of Sue's most memorable runs was "The Big Race," a four.-miler in 1982. She was
just getting back into racing shape, having moved to the Big Apple. Much to her
surprise , Sue took first female; one week later in the First Annual Gay Pride Run,
she duplicated her feat. She's since won three more GPRs and is working on #5.
Though confident, Sue is never smug. She laments that "magic doesn't seem to
happen anymore." Still, she'll shoot for bettering her course record 29:27 in
1989 and hopes to break 37 minutes for a 10K. Sue iR~4ves-eA-~Rys4sa+-aRS
~syeRete§4sa+-sem~et4t4eR,--W2~~s,Q4~y~tR women's races.--''! know where my competition is!" Sue trains hard, generally introducing intervals and fartlek twice a
week, except in the winter wh~n she gives her legs a racing break. Though thriving
on racing competition, Sue prefers to train by herself on hard runs. By now,
Sue knows what she wants, is self-coached and pursues her goals and training methodically and patiently: one.-half hour pre-run stretching (wow!); twice-weekly,
light upper-body weight training; a ltmostly~ balanced diet. She cuts back when
necessary and fits running into the rest of her busy work and social life. No
conf1icts with girlfriend Cynthia over running: "She's my #1 fan--and an excellent
photographer!" What about cross-training? Sue has no plans to branch out and
feels that sports-specific training works best for her. She's as enthusiastic
about Front Runners as she is about her running. To Sue, we're an "elite" club.
Asked about her most special running.-related accomplishment, Sue was quick to reply,
"getting nominated for 1Runner of the Year1by FRNY in 1987." She's proud to don
the pink and gray and has no intentions of "defecting''-..,ever! Front Runners has
been there for Sue and she's always there for us. We're proud of you too, Sue.

THE FRONT RUNNERS NEW YORK ANNUAL BENEFIT RUN AND PICNIC BASH
will be held on Saturday, August 26 at lOam. Heet at the Daniel Webster statue just
inside Central Park at the 72nd Street entrance.
Ask friends and co-workers to sponsor you. Also, please consider sponsoring
yourself. Sponsors agree to contribute a specified amount per mile that you run. The
total contribution is the number of miles multiplied by the amount pledged per mile.
Use the sponsor sheet pledge form provided to record your pledges.
The simplest procedure is to determine in advance the distance you plan to run and
then to collect the contribution at the same time that you ask people to sponsor you.
All contributions should be in the form of a check made payable directly to one of
the organizations listed below, or to another lesbian and gay related service
organization. Checks should not be payable to FRNY. The canceled check ip the
individual sponsor's receipt for purposes of tax deduction.
Bring the checks to any FR event. Do not mail checks directly to the designated
organization. Front Runners will collect all the contributions and turn them over to
all the organizations at one time.
Following the run will be a Picnic Bash.

Please supply details to your sponsor!
