Dear Fellow Runners
Welcome to the 12th running of the Lesbian and Gay Pride Run. We are
happy to be presenting this very special event during this very special
week of Gay Pride! We would each like to tell you what this race means
to us.
Hi, I'm Edna. An important friend introduced me to Front Runners
New York three years ago. Soon after, I ran my first Lesbian and Gay
Pride Run. For the twelth annual Pride Run, I am honored in having the
opportunity of being one of the directors. Working on the run has been
exhausting, enervating, and exasperating, but I wouldn't trade it for the
world. The wonderful and challenging experience has superseeded the
"3 e' s". I've met terrific and colorful characters from the community and
I'm overwelmed with pride to represent the finest and largest lesbian and
gay road race in the nation. I welcome and embrace all runners, walkers, volunteers, and spectators who've come to celebrate the Lesbian and
Gay Pride Run.
Hi, I'm Tony. It was ten years ago when I ran my first Pride Run. I
remember being extremely nervous about running through Central Park
proclaiming my homosexuality, even though I was out to most of my
friends and co-workers. And to make matters worse, someone goofed
and gave me the bib number" 1"! Well, I got over my nerves and ran a
good race, gradually feeling more proud and less scared as the miles
ticked by. Now I gaze at that race number (framed on my wall) and think
how much this event means to me. It really is a race of courage, unity,
and above all pride.
So, here we are now as the race directors/ hoping that we can provide you with an experience that you can remember with pride for years
to come.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Major Sponsors,
the Task Force, Race Starters, The New York Road Runners Club, all of
the Volunteers, and all of the Participants in the 1993 lesbian and Gay
Pride Run. Have a great race!
Proudly,

Edna Benitez/Tony Meola

Front Runner clubs have been in existence since the end of the 1970's.
The first one started in San Francisco. In 1974 two men, Jack Baker and
Gardner Pond, had started a class for gay men and lesbians teaching
running, and from that class they started a running club called 'Lavender
U'. By the beginning of 1979 Bud Long had taken over running the club
and the name was changed to 'Front Runners' after 'The Front Runner', a
highly successful gay novel penned by Patricia Nell Warren. The romantic novel was about a gay athlete who fell in love with his coach and
went on to represent the U.S. at the Olympics. (At one time paul
Newman had expressed an interest in seeing the novel turned into a film
with himself playing the coach.)
The New York chapter was started in October, 1979 by Malcolm
Robinson who used to work for the New York Road Runners Club. He
had placed an advertisement in the club's magazine looking for fellow
gay runners and the club was born with nine members. In the early days
the club ran on Saturday mornings in various locations in Manhattan
often meeting at members homes. Eventually as numbers grew the club
started to rendezvous at different restaurants including the Dakota on
West 72nd Street as well as a night club called Jason's before winding
up at the present Saturday morning home at Rutgers Presbyterian Church
on West 73rd Street from where they run in Central Park. The club's
membership stands just below 500 with just over one quarter of the members being women. The youngest member is in his early twenties and the
oldest in his sixties.
Today there are forty Front Runner Clubs in the U.S. alone with
other groups in Australia, Canada, France, and Israel. Every couple of
years international gatherings of Front Runners are held. Last year it was
held in Long Beach, California.
Front Runner clubs organize different events to which some of the
other clubs travel to take part. The Boston group for example organizes a
race every December called 'The Yuletide Stride' which is a fund-raiser to
buy holiday baskets for People living With Aids. It attracts runners from
far and wide including the Mayor of Boston, Raymond Flynn, some years.
The Philadelphia chapter organizes a Fun Run in September the day
before the prestigious 'Philadelphia Distance Run' takes place. One third
of all the teams that take part in the hugely popular half-marathon are Front
Runner teams coming from across the country.
The New York Front Runner's Big event of the year is the Lesbian
and Gay Pride Run in June, the day before the Gay pride March. Last

year it attracted over l ,000 registrants for only the second time in its
eleven year history. The club takes enormous pride in the fact that many
of the runners who take part are not gay and include some of New York's
elite veterans such as Alan Fairbrother, Ramon Ruiz and Joseph Burns
who regularly win their age divisions. Fred Lebow also regularly runs the
race. Recent official starters have included Borough President Ruth
Messinger and Councilman Tom Duane.

front Runners New York is a running club for lesbians, gay men and
supportive nongay people of all athletic abilities. With almost 500 members, it is the largest of the 30 lesbian and gay clubs associated with
International Front Runners, and it is the largest USA T&F-affiliated running club in the New York metropolitan area. Club members meet on a
weekly basis for informal fun runs and special runs. Regularly scheduled
coaching sessions provide advanced training for members who run competitively. Racewalkers are also welcome. Front Runners NY regularly
fields teams for road races in the New York metropolitan area and further
afield. For more information about club activities and membership applications, please call the Front Runner Hotline at (212) 724-9700, or write
us at: P.O. Box 87 Ansonia Station, New York, NY 10023.

MICKEY ZACUTO

Debbie Bell

The Front Runners community suffered a terrible loss with the sudden death of Mickey
Zacuto on March 10, 1993, from meningitis. One weekend we had enjoyed our regular Saturday run. The following weekend we filled a chapel for Mickey's memorial
service.
Mickey was among the first women in Front Runners, and she cared passionately about the club. She attended most FRNY events, and served as treasurer, newsletter
editor, and Gay Pride Run Director. Mickey was always informed on the issues of the
moment, and invariably had a perspective which she would argue with gusto.
However, the rhetoric never obscured the fact that Mickey loved her Front Runners
family. Her photo albums were full of Front Runners- on vacation trips, at holiday
dinners, and other special occasions. It was through Front Runners that Mickey met
Lenore Beaky in 1983. The strong and supportive bonds that evolved between Mickey
and Lenore embodied the special qualities of best friendship so often touted in lesbian
lore, but so rarely achieved and maintained.
Gay Pride Weekend was a festive time of year for Mickey. It was a time for
reunions with old friends. It was also a time for rallies and marches- for Mickey, it
was always a march, never a parade. But the main event was her beloved Gay Pride
Run. Mickey protested mightily about her times, but no one tried harder. She was a
spirited and determined competitor. This year Mickey won't cross the finish line. But
memories of Mickey Zacuto, out, loud, and proud, will run with us as we enter the
chutes and continue to strive for individual and collective dreams.

GUY ZELENAK CUP

Lenore Beaky

The Guy Zelenak Cup honors the lesbian or gay business or organization which has
entered the largest team in the two-mile Community Challenge fun run. The cup is
named for one of Front Runners' most faithful and important members, a Founder and
stalwart participant in all the club's activities from 1979 until 1991.
Guy Zelenak was present at the establishment of Front Runners New York in
1979, and helped to set it on its feet in those first faltering months; he became the
club's first secretary, a position which he held until his death eleven years later. As
secretary, he was the official and unofficial club historian, accumulating seven photo
albums' worth of pictures and serving as the first newsletter editoi. His commitment to
the club was total and unconditional: he supported and attended every Saturday and
Wednesday run, board and business meeting, special run and social event. He welcomed new members into the club, easing their transition until they felt comfortable
with us. He coached us, found volunteers for our Lesbian and Gay Pride Runs, and
was the first anchor of our Bagel Brigade.
Guy was so proud-proud of being goy, of being a runner, and of being a
member of Front Runners New York. Returning home From the 1986 Goy Gomes, he
clanked on to the plane wearing all 4 or 5 of his track and field medals. Guy Zelenak
died of AIDS complications in June, 1991, but his memory lives on in the hearts of
those of us who knew him. The Guy Zelenak Cup honors those who have displayed the
same love of sport and community which inspires Front Runners today.

Your financial counselor should be someone you can trust.
Someone with whom you can discuss your lifestyle. That's the
only way you can get advice tailored to your needs.
For instance, do you know when it makes sense to name your
lover as a beneficiary of your IRA plan or insurance policy? Do
you know when it's wise to include your lover as a joint tenant
on real estate or other investment accounts?
Are you aware that you may be throwing money away paying
premiums on a life insurance policy that simply does not
make sense for you? You may even be dealing with a company
that practices anti-gay discrimination in lending or hiring.
It's time you change all that. It's time you deal with professionals
