And for others. Warren , 58, delights in hearing stories of how people first found the
book, and was thrill ed to he ar in I 982 that a group of gay runners in San Francisco had
adopted the name for their club. "Th ey invited me to spea k at thei r banquet, but I wasn't
able to then. I recently took them up on it." That there are more than 60 Front Runner
clubs around the world is "in cre dibl e, am azin g," Warren sa id. She's lookin g forw ard to
sounding the horn at the 13th An nual Lesbian and Gay Pride Run , and marks it as th e start
of a week of festivities at the fourth Gay Gam es in N ew York C ity.
Warren was an editor at Reader's Digest for more than 20 years. During that time, she ran
road races and several marathons - including New Yo rk - and recalls being th e fo urth
woman fini sher in the I 970 Boston Marathon. But her running days were short-lived. "I
wrecked my knees in the '70s and pretty mu ch had to give up running. I went back to riding
horses but took some pretty bad falls. Now, I do weight training and I walk. I stay fir."
Wom en aren't fully accep ted as athletes in American so ciety, Warren says, and any
woman com petitor is still likely to be labelled a lesbian. For men, the opposite is true: male
athletes are categorized as masculine, th erefore heterosexual. That's why Warren wrote
about two gay male lovers, nor two lesbians.
"It wouldn 't be th e same story with two women. I wanred, not a gratui tous shock that
Billy was gay, but the deep, questioning shock that a certain kind of story can give," she said.
"It really goes beyond a love story. I wanred to show that this is where Am eri ca's attitudes
toward gay peop le lead, that this is where homophobia leads, to a kid lying dead on the track.
The whol e Harlan and Billy thing, th e shock of exposure, could only happen to men ."
The idea for the book came from a long conversation she had with a young gay runner
she met at a New York holid ay parry in I 972 . The young man had been a nationally prominent miler in college, but had made the decisio n to le ave track and field so he could come
out. "He talked about the press ure and the terror of being found out in co llege athletics.
The whole idea Jelled in my mind, and I knew I wanted it to read like a real live person was
retelling som ething that actually happened."
Warren wrote the book in two months in earl y I 973 and , with some trepidati on, submitted it to her agenr, John Hawkins of the Paul Reyno lds Agency in N ew York. But
H awkin s loved i t - "he said this was a subject whose time had come''- and Jam es Land is,
then an edi tor at W ill iam Morrow, bought Th e Front Runner instan tly. Landis would later
edit Warren's subseq uent gay novels, The Fancy Dancer and The Beauty Qu een . Warren doesn 't
know what happened to the young man who in spired The Front Runner.
Warren, who is of mixed Native American and European blood, expl ored her heritage in
One Is the Sun , published in I99l. It' s a Goddess-spirited tale of a mixed-blood woman chi ef
who lived in the Northwest in the mid-l9th .century and her battles agai nst encroaching settlers and mi ssionari es. The book, the fi rst in a se ries of five novels that are to sp an a
century, refl ects Warren's dedication to individu al libert ies again st authoritarian cu lture and
religion, and her con cerns for women 's rights, gay rights, eco lo gy. species preservati on and
spirituality.
"I just take a very broad perspective," Warren sa id , as I clack ed away at t he keyboard. " I
try to see things in all of th eir variati on."
You go , girl!

GAY MONEY,
STRAIGHT ADVICE.
©t9e1

Your financial counselor should be someone you can trust.
Someone with whom you can discuss your lifestyle. That's the
only way you can get advice tailored to your needs.
For instance, do you know when it makes sense to name your
lover as a beneficiary of your IRA plan or insurance policy? Do
you know when it's wise to include your lover as a joint tenant
on real estate or other investment accounts?
Are you aware that you may be throwing money away paying
premiums on a life insurance policy that simply does not
make sense for you? You may even be dealing with a company
that practices anti-gay discrimination in lending or hiring.
It's time you change all that. It's time you deal with professionals
who understand your financial goals. It's time you call

Weekend and the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday. Frontrunners from around
the globe will be coming to Toronto for this three-day festival of running and
socializing. New York City hosted the first IFI in I 988. Long Beach, California
followed in 1992 and now Toronto in 1996.
Toronto is a cosmopolitan city of almost three million and is home to Canada's
largest lesbian and gay community. It is a compact city with excellent public transportation - no cars necessary here. Toronto's theatres, art galleries, museums and
other cultural institutions attract many tourists. While we won't be hosting the
1996 Olympics (Atlanta got that one), we're horne to the 1992 and 1993 World
Champion Blue Jays. A vibrant lakefront and extensive network of parks will provide scenic venues for the weekend's events. Frontrunners Toronto is excited to
serve as ambassadors to all Frontrunners who will come to Toronto for IFI '96.
So what's next? Write or call us and tell us you're interested in attending IFI '96.
We'd like to add your name to our mailing list so we can keep you informed
throughout 1995 and 1996. Please provide us with your name, address, telephone
number and club affiliation. See you in '96!
