Summer Vacation
First of all, thanks to everyone who
showed up to volunteer for the Advil MiniMarathon on June 8. We staffed nearly the
entire fmish line, and NYRRC's Rita Duffy
made a point of thanking us for being there.
Working the fmish line fm" that race I was
reminded once again why I run. While I enjoyed being up close to see the top fmishers, it was everyone else that I really enjoyed seeing. The looks on the faces of the
women as they crossed the fmish line at
I: 15, 1:30 was really something to see.
They were so happy and proud of their accomplishment... as well they should have
been. All of us, no matter what our race
times are, or even if we don't race, can be
proud that we're out there running.
Registration materials for the International Eront Runners Invitational,
(you're all invited) to be held the weekend
of October 11-14 in Toronto, are now
available on Saturday morning at the club.
They've got a lot of fun events planned, including 10K and 5K races, a 5K walk, and
a 25K (5x5K) team challenge relay, an arrival party, a Saturday night banquet and a
Sunday brunch and awards ceremony. The
total price for everything comes out to
$127 Canadian. With the favorable exchange rate, though, it's a whole lot less in
U.S. dollars. I know October sounds a long
way away, but if you want hosted housing,
the earlier you get your application .in the
better. If you just can't make it on Saturdays and want to register, give me a call. If
you ask nicely, I just might send you the
packet in the mail.
Question of the week: When someone
writes a check on June 4 and mails it with

We must conclude that Amendment
2 classifies homosexuals, not to
further a proper legislative end, but
to make them unequal to everyone.
This Colorado cannot do. A state
cannot so deem a class ofpersons a
stranger to its laws. It is not within
our constitutional tradition to enact
laws ofthis sort.

their race application on June 11, what
goes on in their mind that leads. them to
believe they're still eligible for the preJune 1 application fee? Just wondering...
As you know, putting on the Lesbian &
Gay Pride Run is an expensive proposition, and we couldn't do it without the
support of our sponsors, so let's support
them. Eat in their restaurants, shop in their
stores, buy their products, use their services...and thank them for their support!
It'll mean a lot when we ask them for their
support in the future. Our sponsors are:
American Express Financial Advisors,
Naya Water, American Airlines, Chase
Manhattan Bank, Mary Ann's, H/X Magazine, Universal GrilllMary's, Mingala
West, Nike, Urban Athletics, Claire's, The
Gap, Raymond Dragon Boutique,
Rubyfruit Bar and Grill, Strand's Salon,
and Super Rurmer's Shop.

How about a week in Vermont? Stop for a
moment and think about NYC in July:
90 0 temperatures with 90% humidity...
Okay, now think of bolting out of the city
and heading for the Northeast Kingdom of
Vermont. Cool! (well, yes, literally...)
If you've been attending' our. workouts
(or reading them ...) then you know we
believe strongly in cross-training.
Craftsbury is the ultimate training
environment. Take advantage of the soft
running trails, bike paths and two-milelong Lake Hosmer for swimming and deep
water running. Or take the opportunity to
lay by the lake and catch some R&R while
you watch Adonis-like bodies work their
butts om There's something for everyone
who comes to Craftsbury. Did I mention
the food? Veggies grown in their gardens
and breads baked fresh. Some people
come just for the food!
I'm the head coach and director, which
means I get to play up there all summer.
Coach Jeffjoins me for Multi-Sport Week,
from July 7-13. This week ends with a
Saturday swim/mountain bike/trail run
triathlon, sponsored by the camp, or a
Sunday stop at the NETS-sponsored race
in Fairlee (voted by Triathlete Magazine as
one of the top ten most beautiful races).
Brochures are available at all club
meetings as well as Thursday night
workouts. Need a commercial? Just ask

FRNY visibility and pride. Running or
volunteering, we want to see as many of
you out there as possible, a veritable flood
tide of Front Runners! Our participation
has lapsed over the last few years - we were
all exhausted from, June's heavy race
schedule. But this year let's see if we can
breathe some life into this tradition and
meet on Sunday July 21st, 915t Street and
Park Drive East, 7:30 a.m. Wear your
racing singlet or something that says
FRONT RUNNERS on it prominently.
It's true, volunteering is cool.

Race Captains' Report
BOY HOWDY! Things are really heating up
now. We've had some excellent results
turned in lately. Our men's team posted
some great times in the May points race,
"You Gotta Have Park". Our women's
team "itS non-existent at that race, but the
gals showed in droves for Advil, the
women's points race in June. There were
24, count 'ern 24, Front Runner women in
that race! (Where are they on Saturday
mornings?) In fact, our women won the 5th
place team award! Keep up the good work!
Next on the agenda: the Club Team
Championship, July 21. Break out the
sweat bands and the Gatorade.
See you at the races!

Minutes of the meeting ofthe board of
directors of Front RUDnen New York
March 13, 1996
A couple of years ago, I met someone at a
party and was chatting with him about a variety of things, including Front Runners. At
some point he said, "So you're pretty active
politically." This took me aback a bit, as
I've never considered myselfa pgUtical person, so I asked him what he meant. "Well,
you're a member of Front Runners, a gay
athletic club, and you run with the club's
name on your singlet. That's political." I
had never thought of it that way, but he was
right. Ever since then, whenever I've identified myself as a Front Runner, whether by
wearing our gear at a race, meeting people
at a Center orientation, or registering for a
race as a club member, I can't suppress a
little thrill of pride that I, in my
"nonpolitical" way, am making a statement

April 1996

The mailbag was extra full this month,
since a number of clubs did joint FebruaryMarch issues that missed last month's
deadline. Joint activities and get-togethers
seem to be the trend just about everywhere.
California, which is home to more Front
Runner clubs than any other state or
province, seems to be really getting into the
spirit. EastBay was taking a joint ski trip
with Different Spokes (presumably a GIL
biking club) and the San Francisco club and, reportedly, planning to share condo
space with those San Francisco babes. On
that topic, let me quote from San Francisco's advice column (written by Kate
Moss as told to Heather Locklear): "the
sleeping arrangements on these trips are
pretty loose and unlikely couples always
seem to disappear together or at least end
up snuggling by the fire." On more runnerish pursuits, San Francisco reports on the
"Homo Depot Half Marathon" they ran
along with a number of BayLands Front
Runners, as well as the Valentine's Lake
Merritt Run, after which they joined fellow
EastBay runners for brunch. The event
was such a success that they plan to try
staging more events with local Front Runner groups. San Diego reports on increased efforts to bring more interaction
between the San Diego, Los Angeles, and
Shoreline groups. Of the seven California
clubs I've seen newsletters from, that
leaves only Sacramento out of the picture
- and I haven't heard from them in a while,
so maybe they're hibernating? Back on the
East Coast, Floridians are becoming a bit
more clubby. Tampa Bay reports that Orlando planned to join them for the Gasparilia Distance Classic in late February.
Meanwhile Ft. Lauderdale was cheering
the world to come south for the annual
Seven Mile Bridge Run, and Toronto
planned to join Buffalo for their sixth annual banquet. Somewhat closer to home,
Two Rivers (Albany) plans to come to
NYC for a weekend excursion in late April,

and is looking for interested parties to ride
the five borough bike ride and start planning for the Boston to Provincetown ride.
Unfortunately, seems like they're comfortable enough with NYC that they don't feel
the need to hook up with our club for any
activities. Oh well, not to fret: we get kudos from a BayLands member who enjoyed his new year's run with us, and encourages future visitors to be sure to hook
up with us. Probably the biggest interclub
topic on everyone's mind is the October International Front Runner Invitational in
Toronto. Clubs looking forward to sending
members for the weekend of fun and running in Toronto include Chicago, Sydney,
and Orlando. Philadelphia mentions that
the event has been officially recognized by
the mayor's office of Toronto. And
Toronto itself announces a web site for updates (http://www.inforamp.netJ-walkerd),
as well as the receipt of seed money from
Orlando, Ba,yLands, Atlanta and New
York. This weekend takes place October
11-14, and the preliminary schedule shows
various runs and races, as well as city tours,
organized cocktails and dinner events, as
well as other possible excursions. They're
really putting a lot of effort into organizing
a fun and interesting weekend, and
Toronto's not so far away. So think about
going! In news and events, Shoreline (the

and Cape Cod. San Diego is celebrating
their fifteenth anniversary with plans for
various festivities and a new logo design,
and Tampa Bay announces their first annual (? -- sic) 5K Pride RunlWalk, in
March. On the dishier end ofthe spectrum,
Ft. Lauderdale and Omaha amuse us with
their ongoing scuffle. Omaha apparently
did produce the newsletters as promised,
but had been slower in producing the
promised avalanche of T-shirts and postcards. However, the latest issue of Ft.
Lauderdale's newsletter does include a reproduction of a postcard from Omaha,
along with a report of one T-shi.i1 arriving.
I have to wonder whether Ft. Lauderdale
wasn't hoping for more interesting clothing
items... .I must also report several beefs of
my own. Like, for one thing, Ft. Lauderdale's newsletter is, like, eight pages
long, right? And like, how many pages
does their gossip columnist get to report on
interclub news? Like, three pages with pictures. I mean, they even name one issue
"The Omaha Issue." Now, I know this is
New York and we have more significant
things to report, but really - Donn, can't I
have more than a measly half page at least
every now and then? (Do I hear snores
from the gallery?!) Ft. Lauderdale also
applauds my earlier whining about not seeing Buffalo's nude issue (still haven't seen
it, any club out there that's actually reading
this, hint, hint), but I have yet to see results
from my whining. So I'll whine again:
where are you, Buffalo? And let me add
Miami to my b-list: San Diego tells me
you have a wonderful orange-colored
newsletter (cute, last year) - care to share it
with your buddies in New York? And to
Ft. Lauderdale: let's get together on our
b-lists. Maybe working together we can
have more impact. What do you say?

Deep Water Running
Deep water running is a form of cross training that can increase your endurance and
strength. Participants use a flotation belt
to keep their head above water while running in - you guessed it - deep water. Doug
Stem, who organizes this activity, claims
that it helps runners prevent injuries and
continue to exercise when they are injured.
Front Runners have been offered a special

FRNY Ski Trip
Our annual ski weekend was March 1-3, a
week later than usual, which proved
fortuitous. I had never been on skis before,
and was looking forward to trying a new
sport, as well as being with my friends. We
were slightly worried while driving up to
Vermont, as we did not see any snow on the
ground. The previous week had been ~a:m
and rainy. However, shortly after arnvmg
at our condo at Mt. Snow, it began to snow.
It was a much smaller group this year, only
twelve, but that did not diminish the fun we
had. On Saturday morning, the downhillers
only had to step out the door to the slopes,
while Ed Pyle tutored Jim Gibb and me in
the basics of cross country. Afterward,
some of us took in a swim and stearn, while
others went to the local hangout, the Snow
Bam. Saturday night we gathered in one
condo for a fabulous meal and engaging
conversation. Thanks go to Jerry Smith,
who rearranged some furniture between
condos, so we were all able to sit around the
table together. We tried to entertain Sara
Jane Cuttita-Westerback, but videos won
out. Amy Risch and Nancy Andrews were
there, having returned from Sri Lanka.
Sunday was even more pleasurable. It had
snowed most of the night and was
continuing, off and on. We novices were
eager to try out what we had learned; The
extra snow made falling easier, at least for
me. Some tried Haystack, a smaller
downhill slope nearby. When our weekend
fmally came to an end, we got back on the
road, very tired, but grateful for a
wonderful experience. Thanks go to Paul
Brockmann and Seth Slade for organizing
the trip. Thanks also to Ed Pyle for being

Boy, Howdy! It looks like we're getting
into the swing ofthings. With the exception
of the underwhelming turnout of men for
the Snowflake 4-Miler (a points race,
might we add), we've been seeing quite a
few Front Runner faces at the races. Yes,
the women did outnumber the men 15 to 2
at that race, but then hordes of men turned
out to run and volunteer for tbe Bagel Run
tlote following week. What do we have to
do to get the men to the points races? Give
out smoked fish and onions? Well, the
April points race for men - and women - is
the Queens 112 Marathon on the 24th. I
don't know about the fish, but it's a pretty
flat course and springtime in Queens is
something you just don't want to miss. We

Now ;, the wmlo' of ou' d;=.lo.t. The
person who said training for a spring
marathon is fun never ran 20K in 8-degree
weather or slogged through six inches of
snow. rom ready for spring! Thoughts of
spring bring thoughts of Spring Fling,
D.C. Front Runners' annual weekend of
fun, socializing and -oh, yes- a race. This
year, the weekend is April 26-28. We'll be
leaving here Friday evening, arriving in
D.C. around 1l:00, when we'll be met by
our hosts and whisked off to their cosy
homes. There's a fun run on the Mall on
Saturday morning, followed by lunch at the
nearby Post Office Pavilion. Then there's a
women-only event in the early afternoon...
guys are on their own. In the evening
there's a banquet, dancing and a talent
show (we're invited to participate!). On
Sunday morning is the Sallie Mae 10K
(no, you don't have to do the race to be allowed to come along), followed by brunch
at a Dupont Circle (i.e. gay?) restaurant.
The D.C. Front Runners always put on a
great weekend, so mark your calendars.
Just call the man who has volunteered to
coordinate things on our end, Glen Holman. Glen will be booking the bus, taking
reservations, arranging for hosted housing
(although DCFR has arranged special rates
at a local hotel, if that's what you want),
collecting money and generally making the
whole thing happen. Thanks, Glen, for volunteering. (His number's in the directory).
Speaking of volunteering, (and when don't
I?) we could use some more people for the
Gay Pride Task Force. What we most
need right now is someone to handle
fundraising on the local level. Mike McMahon and George Mayer are doing an awesome job of hitting up big corporations, but
we need someone to contact local people.
You wouldn't be starting from scratch... we
have a database of donors from past years.
Tijink about it and let me know. You'd be

helping the club a lot. (My number's in the
directory). Actually, pleas in the newsletter
seem to work at getting people to step forward. Look what happened as a result of ~
Beth Collins' piece last month. We now
have a Women's Vice President. She read
the newsletter and called me a few days
later to volunteer. Her name is Sally ~
Yanchus, and she's a fairly new member
(but not a new runner). Ladies, use her.
Talk to her. She's your VP. I'd also like to ~
add my voice to Beth's, urging women to
come back on Saturday mornings. Several
women were among the people who made
me feel most welcome when I first joined
the club. I'll never forget Mickey Zacuto ~
scaring the hell out of me by walking over
one day and loudly announcing, "You're
wearing my shorts!" And Doris Stoll made
a point of running with me a couple of 8.
times when the guys were ignoring me (but
I'm not bitter). Women have always been
an important part of this club, and your absence is keenly felt. Pray for spring.

Craig Booth reported a loss for January
of $700 in general operating expenses.
This is primarily due to low winter
turnout at Rutgers.
Membership stands at 441.
The LGPR budget was passed
unanimously. FRNY projects expenses
of$17,348 and revenues of$19,980.
Mike McMahon reported on corporate
fund raising for LGPR. Naya has
verbally agreed to provide water.
Virgin Atlantic is on hold. Tony
Meola has donated Broadway tickets
and Tony Armas has promised
accommodations at his San Juan hotel.
There will be a Charitable foundation
meeting at Peter Hoontis' home on
February 22 at 7:30 p.m.
A large turnout is expected for the
Spring Fling in D.C. on April 26. This
is open to everyone, including those
who choose not to run the race.
Jim Gibb and Lourdes Follins will be
staffing the FRNY table at the Center
orientation on March 9. Care to join
them?
$30 was approved for a 30-word
description of FRNY in this years
Pride Guide.
Harold Brueland has volunteered to be
point person for the AIDS Walle
FRNY traditionally runs in front of the
walk. Harold will be encouraging
other groups to join us.
Metrobeep would like us to list on their
internet resource guide.
Pending
investigating, Jim Brandon will contact
them to set it up.
$500 was approved to restock FRNY
clothing and the Clothing Committee
was given authority to decide on how
best to reduce excessive stock.
Next meeting: Wednesday, March 13
at Craig Booth and Tom Griffith's

Priorities
I just wanted to feel the wind
blowing against my face, to feel alive,
instead of staying on the couch and
feeling miserable. I was taking in the
scenery; I wasn't obsessed with a race
or a workout. It validated the reasons
why I became a runner. It was my time
to relax, get my head straight. and
focus on the battle I was waging.
These are the words of Mark Conover,
1988 men's U.S. Olympic trials winner,
who was diagnosed four years later with
Hodgkin's disease, a fonn of cancer. His
cancer now in remission, he will be running
in the 1996 trials on February 17th. I know
that there have been many times in the past
when I have forgotten why I became a
runner. Mark's words will now help me to
remember.

Race Results
At the bottom of every NYRRC race
entry form, you will see a box marked
"team". If you write "Front Runners
New York" in that box, your finishing
time will automatically be forwarded to
your race captains, Gary Apruzzese and
Sue Foster. For other races that you
would like to have listed on this page,
please notify them of the event's name,
date, location, distance, and your time.
For any race, let them know if your
performance is a personal record or fIrst
time at that distance or in that event (i.e.,
your first triathlon.)
