Minutes of the General
Board Meeting
October 12, 1998

--------, -~~-~~-~_,.,

It's November and the Marathon is
here and gone. Once again the cold air is
blowing and you don't feel like running.
Well, my friends, the holiday pounds are
just around the corner. So what better
way to hold them at bay than a run with
the club? Beginning on Tuesday,
November 17th, we once again will start
our coaching indoors at the Armory.
Then there are always our weekly fun
runs on Saturday and Wednesday in
Central Park or Tuesdays in Prospect
Park. What better way to stay warm and
in shape than pounding the pavement
with your Front Runner family?
The club elections are just around
the corner. We have all but two spots
filled: The President and Treasurer. I
want to thank all those who came forward
for the club and again invite you to
participate and give back to a group that
gives so much. Ballots are drawn up at
the November business meeting.
Although November is the usual
time to give thanks, I am saving that for
my next and last President's Rambling.
Until then, I wish you all a healthy and
happy Thanksgiving.
Our next business meeting is on
Monday, November 16 at Bill Walsh's,
295 Park Avenue South (at 23rd Street).
The time is 7:00p.m. (212) 475-8362 .
Until then ...

We Have An Election
It is that season again. The streets and the
TV airwaves are filled with messages from
all the "political" candidates. It comes as a
reminder that it is also the time of the year
at Front Runners to do a little mud slinging
ourselves .. ... only kidding. Just wanted to
make sure you were paying attention. We
are asking a few good people to step up and
lead us in the coming year. It is kind of
ironic that the election season comes
around the same time as Thanksgiving.
Without going too far out on a limb, we'd
like to say that as members of Front
Runners, we have a lot to be thankful for .
We have a terrific club! Many members
have j oined and .met people YVh') have
Each
become their life long friends.
Saturday, Tuesday and Wednesday the club
provides a welcoming and safe space to
gather and share a common passion running. Each year we show our gay and
lesbian pride in a big way. The club rallies
itself and puts on our Lesbian and Gay
Pride Run. All year long, our coaches, Jeff
and Donna provide individual support to do
our personal best at the running classes.
There are our annual trips out of town, our
special events around the NYC Marathon
wdmuc~mu~more. TheC~bju~
needs some good people to help manage all
of it for us. Here is an opportunity to make
yourselves heard and lead the club. For
those who do not decide to run for an
office, it is a chance to make your vote
count. A few people have already stepped
forward for some of the pos itions, but we

1998 Pride Run raised $5,600 for
YouthPride and $2,600 for the Atlanta
Lesbian Cancer Center. 49% of the runners

Long Beach put out an ' End of Summer'
newsletter, the first in several months.
Besides running, their calendar includes
camping trips to both Big Bear Lake on the
Pacific Crest Trail, and to Pismo Beach
near San Luis Obispo, as wdl as a trip to
Disneyland for 'Gay Day' . However, the
highlight of the newsletter was the reprint
of an article by Patric1a Nell Warren titled
' Changes in the Wind ' in which she
comments on the challenges still facing
openly gay ad lesbian athletes .. She writes
' I am following the fortunes of several
college runners who tell me they hope to
stand open and out on the Olympic Victory
stand in the year 2000.' .f Once again the
good guys and gals of FRs Fort Lauderdale
participated in the Florida Coastal Clean
Up, picking up and properly disposing of
trash found on Florida beaches. After the
clean-up, breakfast was served -- for as
with many FR clubs, all of their sponsored
events must include food. To help keep
track of the feasting, their newsletter
features a free-standing dining schedule . .f
A highlight of Orlando Front Runners
social calendar is a Halloween Costume
Party with the theme Fairy Tales. A ' fairy
good time ' was had by all. .f A San Diego
FR Team participated in the grueling
Marine Corps Mud Run, IOK 'run' over the
course at Camp Pendleton that' s used to
train new Marine recruits. It's called a 'run',
but the tough course includes tire hopping,
hurdles, steeplechase, river crossings, deep
sand, mud pits and climbing up a seven foot
wooden wall. The post run photograph
shows a very happy, very smiley, and very
muddy team . Would they do it again?
Betcha!' .f Chicago FR, Andrew Suozzo,
wrote a fine report on GGV that closes
with the following paragraph: ' I have lived
long enough to remember when the world
was one vast closet, when shame and abuse
were considered our lot. I am happy to have

McDonald reports that he had a tough time
in Amsterdam where soon after arrival he
fell badly and injured both knees and
hands. However, he recovered sufficiently
to run the 10 K on the closing day, as he
says, in 72 half-minutes! A remarkable
time for this 49-year-old and a most
unusual way for him to report his race time.
Congratulations Noel. .f Also from South
Africa .. . Bobba (Philippe) Menache
writes ' In Amsterdam we were privileged
to have made the acquaintance (and reacquaintance ) of some fabulous people.
For example, we met two super, stunning

its party atmosphere and fun run attitude.

Frontrunners Rhode Island reported that
about a dozen members participated in The
Blessing of the Fleet 10-Miler (another
great race name). They are also planning to
put up a team for the October 25th Cape

Frontrunners tell us that theirs was a great
summer for rain-free-weekend-running.
Attendance has been up with over 20
members showing for the regular runs on
Tuesdays and Sundays . .f Over on the West
Coast Seattle FRs put on a good showing at
their Race For the Cure. Among the 15,000
participants was none other than VP AI

course, also found time to make a speech . .f
Finally, pleased to hear, via e-mail, from
London FR Walter Denn ing. He, along
with another London Frontrunner and two
American pals, is currently in Italy for the
Venice Marathon. Walter also reports that
the London Club is looking for assistance

The Games We Play ...
Another Gay Games is behind us, and
before I review, I'd again like .to thank
Gary Apruzzese and Ruth Gufsky for all
the hard work with Team New York. The
uniforms and beads were a big hit with the
crowds (who could picture?) and Chip
Schoonmaker basic white sarongs made us
boys stand out even more- Bravo Ch ip !
Now for the Review. The high point
for me was the Sunday fun run with
International Front Runners. Again thanks
to Gary and Geoff Perry for working with
the San Francisco Front Runners to pull in
our clubs from around the world. We did an
easy run , then picnicked afterwards. The
group had such a good time that they made
two more informal runs on Tuesday and
Thursday morning. It was also a perfect
time for Front Runners Berlin to push the
International Front Runner Invitational

2000.
Sadly, once again, the Games had
more than enough problems. Starting on
our trip 0ve;, '.ve 1ea!11ed abaut !he ~f:2.ters
not being able to compete. Amsterdam
never received permission from the JSU
(The Skating Federation) and did not notify
the skaters until the week of the Games that
if anyone competed they would be banned
for life. Next, word spread about the age
awards. Unlike the past Games, and what
was advertised, there were not going to be
awards in five -year age groups. Each
sport ' s award varied, some in ten-year
groups; in the marathon it was 19-39 years.
When we complained to the
organizers, we were told we were missing
the true spirit of the Games, and we were
"spoil sports who should just go home." I'd
say this is an insult to everyone who trained
hard, and in good faith came to compete

with their peers . If the Games are to be
taken seriously, the Federation must work
this out. Unless the focus in on the athletes
and the venues first, the Games will never
be anything but second rate.
It was unfortunate to have the Games
end for me on such a sour note, but it does
not take away from all the great
performances that so many had . Results
will be listed in the next newsletter. To be
listed, send times and events to the club
address, or call/e-mail your race captains,
Steve or Jan.
Last, but most important, thanks to

performances last week that Jeff had a

for another smart marathon. Thanks,

Palm Springs may be a relatively
new FR club, but they are obviously old
hands at putting out a smart looking
newsletter. Their last issue was chock-full
of photographs.
There were Front
Runners eating, Front Runners drinking,
Front Runners hot tubbing, Front Runners
picnicking, Front Runners posing and, oh
yes, there were two shots showing Front
Runners actually running.
Another different look from Front
Runners San Diego whose six page
newsletter is printed on six different
colored papers. The content however is
down to earth and a lead story gave a
graphic description of the danger of
dehydration as witnessed during the recent
hot and sunny Rock'n'Roll Marathon . At
San Diego FR' s water station at mile 25 a
young elite runner collapsed and required
treatment from the Fire Department and
paramedics. Happily after treatment he
came back to the station, thanked everyone
for their help and went on to finish the
marathon . For good advice on hot weather
running they reference an article by
Truman Clark ' The Hot Zone' in Runner's
World June 1998 issue, pp 70-75
San
Francisco
FrontRunners
President, John Kruse reports that after
years of having a functional but nonfabulous web site, the club now has a
beauty thanks to the SFFR Blair Ireland.
You
can
check
it
out
at
http://www.sirius/-ireland/SFFR.html .
In August, d c front runners
established an annual Racing Circuit.
Their objective is to enhance the quality of
traming and racing among the club ' s
members. Participants will be scored on
their best eight of the twelve races that
make up their running year. The boys and
girls are getting serious down there!
Frontrunner/Fro ntwalkers Chicago
(that well known eating club that also
runs) is still having trouble finding places
large enough to accommodate the 125 or
more runner and walkers who show up for
breakfast. They are considering talking a
leaf out of FRNY's book and hiring a
church basement. Food could be provided
by a "catering truck" . Yuck!
Is it a West Coast thing or a trend?
Seattle Frontrunners have established a
Friends and Family Invitational. Once a
year they designate a Saturday run as

September 1998

"Friends and Family Day" and invite
neighbors, mothers , fathers, sons,
daughters, significant others, and wishyou-were-a-sign ificant-others to join
them for a run or walk around Green
Lake. And Baylands Frontrunners
have an annual Kids Day to recognize
those BLFR members with children. This
year they had big kids, small kids and
even grandkids!
Frontrunners Atlanta report there
were more than 800 participants in their
1998 Pride Run in Grant Park. They say
that makes them the second largest Pride
Run in the country. The only problem in
an otherwise well run race was that the
Grant Park maintenance crew didn ' t
show up to unlock the bathroom doors.
Race Director Jim Kane made a
command decision to cut the locks off,
after a bunch of runners started doing a
one-hop dance around the faciiii:y. Way
to go Jim!
Hats off to Amsterdam! The city did
a fantastic job in hosting the Gay Games
'98. And a special thanks to the
Volunteers . .. from the moment you
arrived they where everywhere wearing
their easy-to-spot bright yellow T-shirts
emblazoned with a big "Friend" logo
across the chest. And they were indeed
friendly, and helpfu I, as were all of the
Amsterdamers.
Opening and Closing Ceremonies
took place in the impressive Amsterdam
Arena . At the Opening it was such a thrill
to march in with almost 15,000 other
participants to the roar of the huge
cheering crowd . Besides moving

Front Runners
speeches, including a great one by Harvey
Fierstein, the hit of the show was a
production number in which some three
hundred guys in sailor outfits did a strip,
while The Weather Girls sang "It's
Raining Men". The number was good
enough to be repeated at the Closing
without complaint.
Athletic events got off to a brilliant
start on Sunday with an International Front
Runner Fun Run and Picnic in
Yondelpark, Amsterdam ' s most popular
running spot. It was a great day to catch up
with friends from other clubs and other
countries and meet face to face , for the
first time, e-mail acquaintances such as
Brad Miyasato of Shoreline FR, John
Kruze of San Francisco FR and Bodo
Erdmann from Berlin .
At Track and Field the Americans and
the Germans seemed to dominate the field
-- particularly in the 5K and 1OK races .
The I OK was run on the roads, but the 5K
was run on the track and racing the 13
circuits was a first time experience for
many participants. The pole vault drew a
fascinated crowd as two youthful,
identical twin brothers, from a former
Soviet state battled each other for top
place . In the Triathlon, the Australian
Front Runners did well capturing several
medals .
Team New York jackets were much
admired ; Vancouver Front Runners had
a great logo and Philadelphia FR's light
blue jackets were easy to recognize as
were Berlin's brilliant yellow and red
outfits that seemed to be everywhere. But
my creativity award went to .3oston Frant
Runners who carried giant red blow-up
lobsters that matched their bright red
uniforms . (Good job Boston). Hits of the
cultural program were the sold-out shows
of Harvey Fierstein and Les Ballets
Trockadero de Monte Carlo. Both shows
drew standing ovations and multiple
encores.
I will leave it to others to tell of the
other evening activities that seemed to
rage on 'til dawn and the jammed to
capacity street parties that throbbed with
energy, music and merriment. To sum up
the week, I' ll just borrow a line from Cole
Porter that says it all for me -- "What a
swell party that was !"
