From Your Race Directors ...
t's been a great experience serving FRNY as the race
directors for this years Lesbian and Gay Pride Run.
When we volunteered to be the eo-Race Directors back in
December, it was the holiday season and everything was very
carefree and easy. Drinks were flowing freely at holiday parties
and we had a zillion ideas on how to make the 1999 race one
that we'd never forget.
Unfortunately, the drinks stopped on january 2nd and we
had to get to work!
As we reflect back on all the meetings and events leading
up to race day June 26th (the introductory meeting with the
NYRRC, the Sports Ball, the Lesbian & Gay Consumer
Expo, the monster mailing, forging new friendships at the
wildly popular fundraiser at the 8 of Clubs, stuffing the race
bags at the NYRRC, "registration Friday" and race day
preparation) one theme shines through - the friendship and
comraderie between our Front Runners members and our
many supporters.
From the much appreciated direction and help provided by
the New York Road Runners Club (yes, Claudia- the
phonecalls are finally over and you can now get on with your
life!) to the incredible generosity of the 8 of Clubs bar (the
hosts of our "Back in the Yard" fundraiser) we've felt the
strong bond that exists between our Club and our
community.
So, as we partake in Lesbian and Gay Pride Weekend
festivities with friends and lovers and ~elebrate the memories
of deceased loved ones, let us revel in the reality of being
members of such a strong, supportive and vibrant family.
It's been a pleasure everybody - have a super race and
weekend!

Hey! What's That You Say?
We asked a number of Front Runners how
they would describe the club to a newcom er.
This is what they had to say:
It is a very laid back group of men and women who just
enjoy being outside running and talking. I love that a
group of people can meet so consistently yet not have to
be overly formalized. There is never a sense of anxiety with being
new, because everyone is so friendly. -Scott Godsen,Age 25

''

The way I would describe FR is that in addition to being a serious
running club, there are also many social activities to participate in,
including non-runn ing events such as the ski trip. It's a great way to
meet people and be in great shape.- Marnell McNamara,Age 37
A "serious" running club that still manages to be friendly, supportive
and fun. There is little "negative" competition between members,
only a shared wish to help everyone improve and enjoy the sport.
There is such a range oflevels of ability and commitm ent that there
is genuinely a place in the club for everyone . -Jan Aitchison, Age 3 6
First of all I would tell them that it is not competitive. We have
member s who have won marathons, first overall, and others who
belong to The Caboose Club, a society for runners who have
officially come in a race dead last. You don't have to be fast, or 23
years old, or even gay .. . just like to run, or want to like to .. .
-Donn Peppler,Age 47
I really think that people who regularly show up for FRs are a select
group of people within the gay world. First all, anybody who's there
at 1Oam Saturday morning probably doesn't make a regular habit of
clubbing on weekends. For the most part, we're health conscious and
more down-to -earth.Whatever the reason, FRs is a great nonthreatening way of meeting other people, particularly if you don't
like cigarette smoke, yelling over loud music and needing a couple
of drinks to loosen up. -Richar d Platt, Age (Classified Information!)
Anyone can run- take it from a lifelong non-run ner. Just come
and hang out with us if you want, and the running bug
'
'
will bite you. And don't forget, every mile run is 100 guiltfree calories you can consume later.- Paul Racine, Age 52
