The Club started in 1979 to provide encouragement and support to gay men, lesbians, and supportive nongay people who are interested in running and running-related events and activities. Since then, the Club has expanded its roster of activities to include race walking, track & field, bi/triatlllons, and cycling. A central goal is to encourage new runners and to support more experienced ones, regardless of age or skill level. Whether you are running for fun, for fitness, as a social activity; or just to ease into New York and enjoy the parks, we're glad to have you join us. \'\lith membership surpassing 475, FRNY is the largest of the more thanwo National and International lesbian and gay clubs associated with International Front Runners and one of the largest lesbian and gay groups in the New York metropolitan area. Front Runners New York is one of the hardest working, most visible clubs in New Yi)rk City. Our Lesbian and Gay Pride Run is a points race in the New York Road Runners Club circuit and in the �Metropo litan Athletics Congres s G rand Prix Series. We also hold an annual indoor track & field meet. We statf the 24-Mile water station for the N YC Maratho n and maintain one of the finish line chutes. We organize two weekly fun runs in Manhatt an and one in Brooklyn , and once a week we hold a Coaching and Training class to learn about form, racing and strategies. Two adjuncts of the club, the Fast and Fabulous cycling team and the Triathlon team, hold a variety of trai ning and social fun ctions. And the list goes on. 1979 Ken Majerus �Special Awards The Guy Zelenak Award is given to the organization or business which has the largest number of finishers in the Community Challenge. Guy Zelenak, who died of AIDS complications in 1991, was one afFront Runners New York's most faithful and dedicated members from 1979 until shortly before his death. The Guy Zelenak Award honors those who have displayed that same love of sport and community which inspires Front Runners today The Mickey Zacuta Award is given to the tlrst Front Runners New l::ork male and female masters runners (age 40 and up) in the 5-mile race. A true activist, as well as a member ofFRNY from 1983 until her sudden death in 1993, Mickey Zacuto was one of the club's most supportive members as well as its general conscience. This award has been endowed by Mickey's family in gratitude for the love and support that she received from Front Runners throughout most of her adult life. The AREA Award is presented by the American Run for the End of AIDS to the first female and male New York Front Runners to cross the 5-mile finish line. The award was conceived in 1987 to show AREA's appreciation for FRNY's support of Brent Nicholson Earle's zo-month, 9,ooo mile run around America in 1986 and 1987.
