Fast and Fab Cycling Club of
Front Runners New York
Budget request 2000, presented by Bob Nelson
Board meeting, January 20, 2000
The Fast and Fab had a financially difficult year, with our results in the red for the first
time. (See the accompanying materials, prepared by Reuben Danzing.) The final result,
however, is not as bleak as Reuben's numbers; deduct from the $942.75 the $300 we were
allocated last year as well as some $80 or so in receipts received since the account was prepared.
Our two major trips this year, to New Hope, Pa., over Memorial Day weekend, and to a
lesbian and gay campground in eastern Pennsylvania July 4th weekend, were money-losers for
the club. In both cases, vans we needed to transport gear were undersubscribed. And for the
New Hope ride, I promised two riders who had to cancel their participation that their payment
would go to Front Runner memberships instead, which it did, nevertheless leaving us somewhat
short for the event. The two events combined left us about $300 in the hole.
Additionally, our coaching sessions with Dave Jordan, a well-known and gay-friendly
. cycling coach, were likewise undersubscribed. Postage and photocopying costs ran more than
expected as well, for mailings to inquiring cyclists, which include descriptions of the cycling
group and Front Runner applications.
Expenses yet to come include renewing our membership in the League of American
Bicyclists and resubscribing to that organization's insurance program, which insures Front
Runners and its offers for three cycling-related events at $1 million apiece. We will also send out
our annual invitation to the Homocyclosocial, scheduled this year for Feb. 26; the event is held at
the Lesbian and Gay Community Center and helps recruit new participants. The mailing list,
which includes any cyclist who has ever given me her or his address, is now up to 650, wi;th
about 150 of those currently Front Runners, so the mailing will go to about 500. The ~st for
that will be about $165 for stamps and $40 for envelopes.
Projects this year include finding a sponsor for the next edition of the Fast and Fab jersey,
a new complement of trips and starting a small racing team to prepare for Gay Games in Sydney.
We expect these activities to pay for themselves.
In sum, we'd like to request funding for our mailing expenses and the bike organization

membership and insurance. We also normally take out a $30 ad in the Pride Guide. We'd also
request that Front Runners cover our 1999 deficit, so we can start the millennium fresh.
