The best part of being Secretary this past year has been working with Michael. While we both know how to do the grunt work of our jobs, we share a common philosophy about our club. That we're runners who want to be able to run for the rest of our lives and share that experience with our brothers and sisters both on the course and off. So I'd like to be around for another year doing this job. I'm happy with the progress that we've made in putting the RUN back in Front Runners and hope you are too. increase awareness and visibility of our club, as well as be a voice for Front Runners in advocating the benefits of our club to the city of New York and to the running community in the Greater New York Area. I have been a member of the club for four years and I welcome the opportunity to give back to the club that has given so much to me in terms of guidance, support and friendships. As an administrator in the nonprofit world when not running, I can appreciate the need to stretch limited resources, and therefore, find that the role of Treasurer would be most fining. As such, I would be happy to have the opportunity to lend my talents and ideas to assist the club to gain more visibility in both the athletic community and the gay community. I would like to take this Men's Vice President Dan Armstrong moment to tell you a little about myself as well as Hello all, I am Dan Annstrong and for the past why I feel that I am qualified to assume the position year I have been a board member of Front Runners as your Director-At-Large. I joined Front Runners New York in August New York in the position of Men's Vice President. I am seeking re-election to that same position for the 1998 at the age of 27, a few months after relocating upcoming year. I have been a member of FRNY for from Southern California. My primary reason for nine and a half years. This past year I have been joining Front Runners was to meet fellow gay and active in helping to organize FRNY's first winter lesbian runners who love to run, as well as be part of dance fund raiser, revitalizing our Saturday morning a supportive, friendly environment. Second, I want to be in a position to Dave Caraway I am currently a director at large on the board of Front Runners, having been appointed to fill a vacancy a couple months ago. I am now looking to get elected to that position in my own right. I finally got involved on the board after seven years in the club, because although the club is very strong in certain areas, such as social and recreational running, there is definitely something that has been missingsomething we must foster-a competitive running core and more young runners and women to fill that void. When I got involved on the board several months ago, several of us made the first steps to get the speed training program up and running again. As a result, we now have an experienced coach who is working our buns off every Tuesday and Thursday nights. We have also increased the speed training participation from a scant handful to about 20 regular participants. Many members who never considered themselves "fast" have benefited from the speed training and are improving their times. I think those of us who took part in that effort have much to be proud of and much more to do. I personally would like to see more members of all speeds, ages and genders participating and improving within the program. I would also like to see us use the training program to recruit more young runners including young women. Have you seen many 20 somethings at the club lately? I really haven't seen many either and I think that's a huge shame and failure on our part that young men and women aren 't coming to us as a healthy outlet for social interaction and recreation. It also doesn 't bode well for the long term survival of the club if we don 't Iift a finger to accommodate or recruit young members. The speed program, I believe, could be a big draw for them. In this year alone, I have run in 8 New York Road Runner Club road races, 3 NYRRC cross country meets and 5 track meets including the Gay Games where I am competing in 5 events ranging from the 800 to the I OK. None of this includes, my one-day stint as a "Drag Racer" during the Ocean to Sound Relay (but that's another story I'll tell you sometime over a beer). I think that my perspective after competing in these events will be helpful to the club in increasing our own visibility, recruiting and future participation in events that really make running a lot of fun . So briefly, my number one priority is to bolster the speed and track programs for all levels of runners, men and women, while maintaining a very vibrant recreational and social aspect to the club. I also am committed to helping the club transition to a web and email based communications system so that we can spend some of that SI 0,000 or so that the club wastes on postage and copying each year on more recreational, social , and competitive activities within the club. I am already involved in this process. I hope you will consider voting for me for Director at Large. Women's Vice President Donna Checkan Front Runners has been a part of my life for a long time and has seen me slowly come out over the years. (I remember going to speed training run by Guy Zelenak). When I first got out of college I ran races in the park, I would enter as a Front Runner but was too intimidated to wear the team singlet because everyone would know. Slowly I got brave enough to wear the uniform proudly. I wanted to give back to the team in some way, so eventually started coaching with Jeff Singleton. Over the past two years, Front Runners has not been a priority for me-{)ther parts of my life took. precedence. (I basically fell off the radar screen.) Now that I've decreased outside commitments and Brady is coaching the team, I have the energy and time to give back to the team again. Front Runners, as an organization, is remarkable. One test of a good organization is longevity. Another is the ability for leadership to transfer to many individuals. For all these years I've sat back and watched the board change and grow.
