running program would not be the success
that it has been.
If Kelsey is our soul, Donna Checkan
is our conscience. Donna will not let us
forget where we have been and how we
should be today. I am grateful for that.
Despite a busy schedule. Donna has
reached out to the women in the club to
make them feel welcome and heard, in our
male-dominant group.
I have to write about Dan Armstrong
and Ted Paszek at the same time because
the three of us have truly functioned as a
team. Ted reorganized the breakfast set-up
and Dan has made sure that there are
volunteers each Saturday morning. If no
one signed up, they did the work. For
every meeting, party, barbeque, pot-luck,
or movie night that I had at my home, they
were there to help me with set-up and
clea.n-up. We've spent hours together
buym.g breakfast and party supplies,
planmng events, talking about the club
and how to make it better. I simply could
not have done this job without their help
and support.
We are lucky indeed to have such
wonderful people working on our behalf
to make sure that we have the best club
possible. Thank you Sean, Dave, Kelsey,
Donna, Dan and Ted for such fine work.

This is my 22nd letter to you as
president of this wonderful club. With
only three months left in my term, I would
like to take this opportunity to tell you
what a great board you have had this year.
Sean Butler likes to tell the story that
we arrived at Front Runners on the same

the success of our running program this

Dave Caraway has been a whirlwind

our club is up-to-date with information via

September Board Meeting
We've started the fall season with
good news in our accounting
department. With the arrival of the
Citibank sponsorship check from 2002
for $5000, and our proceeds from Pride
Run 2003, we currently balance our
books out at $30,733. In consideration
of all our activities and programs this
past year, this is indeed a great intro to
our 25th year. And speaking of our 25th,
we've set aside January 31st for our
Annual Awards Dinner to celebrate
2003 and kick off our year-long
observance of the past 25 years.
Our new membership brochure is
almost finished and should be debuting
by October. A big thanks to Howard
Zucker for his expert graphic layout
talent and also to everyone who
participated in the photo shoot.
The Cross Country Meet has been
delayed until November 9 and we're
thinking about combining it with a
Meet-the-Membership Picnic. It'll be a
great way to stretch out the running
muscles and trade war stories with all
our fellow members after marathon
weekend. More details will follow next
month.
The next meeting of the Board will
be Monday, October 20th at Michael
O's.

perfect (except for a mild wind from hurricane Isabel) for enjoying the summer twilight. There have been plenty of runners

Front Runners

If

you thought that the February
weather in New York was a tad
chilly, consider the plight of our
sister club up in Toronto. This
winter they reported a record low
temperature of minus 37C (that's -34.6F by
my calculation). "It was brutally cold
weather for running" they said in what
must be some sort of record of
understatement. In spite of the weather the
club is quite active. A new President,
Joseph Van Veen was elected, a new club
logo has been designed and plans are afoot
to once again hold a Pride and Remember
Run in the late Spring.
Orlando Front Runners have a newlook
Newsletter
and
website
(www.orlandofrontrunners.org) that lists
the club's multiple activities. In March they
organized a Cedar Key Escape of sleeping,
swimming, walking, biking, napping,
eating, sitting, rocking, playing board
games, resting, shopping and reading.
Another listed activity was "watching the
plane land at the airport". As you may
have gathered Cedar Key is one sleepy
Florida town. In February, the club
participated in the Orlando Aids Benefit
Walk that raised close to $35,000. In April
the club will celebrate its lOth Anniversary
with what they say will be a six-monthlong party. If you are headed down to
Orlando be advised that the club has a
temporary new meeting point due to
renovations at the Red Pagoda, · the old
gathering spot. The new spot is on the pier
on the north side of Lake Eola Park at
Robinson Street near Reeves House.

The LA Marathon XVIII was held on
March 2 and many LA Frontrunners
participated both in the race and at the
LAFR water station at Mile 11. There was
also a pre-race Pasta Feed and their
traditional Post Race Brunch that is a fun
event for all the runners and the volunteers.
Another recent highlight was a trip to
Catalina Island for 5K and 1OK runs and
the Catalina Marathon. The island is
popular with the club members. The annual
Catalina Island camping trip will be held
the weekend of September 5.
The new President of San Francisco
Front Runners is Michael Tomas. He has
had a long association with Frontrunners
and has been a member of the Chicago,
Denver (founder in 1986) and Los Angeles
Clubs. He has been a member of the San
Francisco club for two and a half years and
an active runner for 23 years. At least half
a dozen LAFRs have qualified for the
Boston Marathon and will make the trip

across the country for the start of the April
21 race.
If you are looking for a new Marathon
to run, Baylands reports that the Big Sur
International Marathon will be held April
27. However, they warn that while this is a
beautiful course there are lots of hills.
Incidentally, Baylands' new President is
Peter Sass.
Sydney Frontrunners can now be
found at www.sydneyfrontrunners.org.
Club members are currently heavily
involved in a training program for the
Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon
which is one of the most popular races
"down under". lt will be held Sunday, May
25. The club membership stands at around
150 and participation in the club's events
has increased considerably since the Gay
Games. This club will also have a new
President who will be elected at the AGM
on May 10.
Most of us know that Sydney's Gay
Games VI was a smashing success from
the participants point of view. Generally
speaking over 12,000 athletes went home
happy. However, from a fmancial point of
view the picture is far less rosy. While the
final figures are not yet in it appears that
there will be a loss of more than
$1 ,500,000 (AUD).
An unfortunate coda to a great event!
Happy running everyone,

25TH ANNIVERSARY NEWS
At the March Board Meeting, we announced and briefly outlined two of the major focal
points for our year-long observance of our 25th Anniversary. The first is a major
fundraising campaign that will end in December 2004 to raise $25,000 for FRNY and our
Charitable Foundation. We will be soliciting corporate donations as well as individual gifts,
with more details to follow. The second component is an exciting one, because we are
going to produce a multi-media CD covering our 25 years as the premier gay and lesbian
sports club in New York City. The CD will be distributed to the membership as well as the
participants in the 2004 Gay Pride Race. For this we're going to need your help: we need
pictures from past years and members willing to share their stories about being a Front
Runner. We have a lot of lead time to work on this, but asking for help is never too early.
So those of you out there who'd like to lend a hand for whatever your individual talent is,
step up and be counted. With a little help from each of us the job will be that much easier.

REPORT

Well Spring is finally here! The
prospect of running outside-snow-andice-free-looks to be a reality at last.
March was a great month for the club-so
many members participating in the NYRR
events. We are going to have to start
lobbying for more space in the newsletter.
A couple of admin issues first: if you
are co~petin~ in any of~he NYRR events,
make It a pomt of checkmg your result on
line postrace. Check NYRRC.org under
race results to see if they have recorded
~o~r resul~ co.rrectly. Ifnot, you can correct
It VI~ email. direct to NYRRC, and cc DJ or
Patnck (jdaw~on@westpac.com.au or
pthomas@workmgtoday.org) to make sure
the club has ~our correct result. There have
been a .few mstances where NYRRC has
not registered the FRNY notation, or net
time, so this will obviously effect the club's
tally as well. I know my girlfriend has a
sudden bout of Turrett's should her scores
not be accurately tabled. I would advise
s~lf~checking the NYRRC website to avoid
Similar outbreaks all throughout FRNY. :)

Points races for April

and
Men's.NYRR 8000 (8K)

Don't forget Women's Run Day on

Happy running

Out of Bounds
Mike Orzechowski recently met with
Out of Bounds, the new non-profit
organization that serves the sports and
recreation organizations and interests of the
LGBT community in the greater New York
City area. Just over a year ago, they realized
that there was no organization to serve the
basic needs of the sports and recreation
organizations in the area. Most of the
organizations were relatively isolated
within their own membership and unaware
of, or indifferent to, the other groups and
their activities. Out of Bounds will serve as
a clearinghouse for the collection and
dissemination of information about the
activities of all the sports and recreation
groups.
Now
under
construction
www.outofboundsnyc.com will feature
monthly calendar, similar to the Front
Runners calendar, with daily activities for
all the sports and recreation organizations
with links for complete information. They
hope that, with this information available,
organizations can avoid scheduling events/
activities such as fund-raisers and major
tournaments that conflict with those of
fellow groups. They also hope that it will
result in more cross-sport participation,
whether as active participants, volunteers,
or just as fans cheering from the sidelines.
An informal survey found that the vast
majority of the participants fall within the
25 to 35 year old age range. Out of Bounds
plans to address this imbalance by
conducting outreach programs aimed at
increasing the number of 18 to 25 year olds
and 40+ year olds in all sports. They will
work with the organizations to assure that
each one offers a friendly, welcoming
environment for those who want to compete
as well as for those whose interests are
more recreational.
They are already serving the sports and
recreation groups by getting word out about
their events, their need for volunteers, by
helping new groups get started, and .by
putting individuals who want to participate
in sports in touch with the organizations
that match their interests.
If you have any questions or would like
to help out, please feel free to contact Will
Smithers, president of Out Of Bounds
NYC: wsmathers@nyc.rr.com.

A special committee has begun a
dialog to discuss the mission of the club
cmd how Fast and Fabulous is or is not a
part of that mission. I anticipate that this
discussion will take some time. You will be
kept informed as to the progress of that
dialog. To express your own viewpoint,
contact any Board member or the
appropriate representative from Fast and
Fabulous.
I would also like to congratulate once
again our honorees for 2002. The club was

February is going to be a busy month.
Monday, February 3rd is our monthly
Chelsea Run. Go to the website and
calendar for the time and place. On Friday,
February 7th, we're heading out to Madison
Square Garden for the Millrose Games.
Saturday, February 15th we will dance the
night away at the LIG/B/T Center Dance
from 9:00 a.m .-1 :00 p.m. It will be our way
of celebrating Valentine's Day together.
The first Points Race of2003, for men
and women, is the Snowflake 4-miler.
Race Captain, Patrick Thomas is working
with a group of Front Runners to ensure
that we field teams for these races. The
Club Council has developed a new system
(actually old) where the clubs will be
divided into a two-tier format, A and B.
FRNY will be in tier B giving us an
opportunity to fmish at or near the top of
our tier.
The 22nd is a busy day for the club.
That evening, Fast and Fabulous will hold
it's annual Pot Luck at the LIG/B/T Center.
The NYRRC Club Banquet is also being
held that night. The Board will be reserving
a table for Club Night to help increase our
presence within the New York running
community. Folks are still running at
training at the Armory on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings. We will be running in
track meets at the Armory on the 13th, 21st
and 27th.

If you haven't already done so, check
out the new calendar at our website. Dave
Caraway has done a superb job of creating
a calendar to help us stay informed .about Editor & Calendar
all the activities of the club. You can refer
Proofreader
to it every day to see what is planned.

Board Meeting Minutes:
January 13th, 2003
Our first meeting of the year brought
together a large group of members to
voice their opinion on the future of Fast
& Fab in our club. There was much
discussion on both sides of the issue and
it was apparent that further discussion
and information was needed. So Michael
0 has appointed a committee composed
of board members and representatives
from Fast & Fab and the Tritons, to
explore this issue further. Their first gettogether will be Monday, January 27th
and it's hoped that the issues will be
further defmed in the best interests of all.
More about the general discussion can be

Dave Caraway has been tirelessly
working on FRNY's new website
calendar. It is now up and running at
www.frontrunnersnewyork.org. Check
there for the latest in what's happening at
FRNY both on and off the running

We need a housing coordinator to
help with out-of-town visitors coming to
New York racing events. Please see one
of the board members if you're interested.
Our race captain Patrick Thomas
encourages everyone to come out for the
February 9th NYRRC Two-some race.
All running levels are welcome!
Michael Westwood, our Pride

planning and work to do, so if you can
help out in any way with publicity ideas
or possible sponsorship prospects, please
let us know.
The next meeting of the board will
be Monday, February lOth at Michael

RACE
CAPTAINS'
REPORT

I

Ah, winter at last! So come on out for
a brisk run in the Park. Talk about cold!
Geez! The Frostbite 10-miler did some
biting, but that was not enough to stifle
Front Runner diehards. They still had to get
out there and have a go. It was a women's
run. That, and the fact that running in 10degree weather is a challenge that not every
runner can attest to, brought out a great
number of our club. Check out the crazies
on the Finish Line page! Just look at the
numbers that are coming out for races these
days. Good job everyone!
So what's on our agenda for February?
Hmmm .. . The Snowflake 4 miler! That's
this month's point race for both men and
women. For the trendy folk amongst you,
this race usually has marvelous goodies,
beside the standard T-shirt. Previous years
have seen beanies, gloves etc., so you will

A strange. thing happened in the ladies

The Urban Warrior
Yes, we know how cold it is
outside and how the wintry winds play
havoc with our skin. But that's no
reason not to run outdoors, even in the
harshest of weather. I found a great
product last year put out by Kiehl's
called All-Sport Non-Freeze Face
Protector. This stuff really works on
your skin to protect it from the wind
and extreme cold. It's water resistant
and kind of like a wax-based product
that isn't greasy at all. It's not cheap at
about $15, but a tin of it should last you
the whole winter season and then some.
And it's also SPF30 so you won't have
to worry about the dermatologist either.
Give it a try because it's a whole lot
better than
the
oldfashioned
standby of
Vaseline.

outing to the Milrose Games, to come to a bowling or kayaking outing and much, much more in
2003.
Dave and I will be two of FRNY's Social Coordinators (the traffic controllers) this year. While the
core of the club for 2003 is seeking to focus a bit more on our running roots - both competitively
and recreationally, the two of us will be helping to take the club back to the social part of our
mission. We'll be helping to facilitate social events so our members can come together and have
the opportunity to get to know each other better so we can build a stronger club. We hope these
social gatherings will help us all celebrate our diversity as runners, cyclists and triathletes who
come together under the Front Runners banner.
Look for a couple of new twists to the social mix in 2003. We hope to have an array of
1) Planned Events where everyone attending will need to plan ahead and purchase tickets
in advance such as a group outing to a NYC Gay Men's Chorus performance, or the

calendar and then just show up if you're interested.
We'll be asking members to start checking the FRNY website and its calendar on a more frequent
basis so you can see the latest social event postings. Moreover, Dave and I invite all of you to
bring us your ideas for social events so we can help get them on the FRNY calendar and to
encourage you to move ahead and "produce" your events. So, we invite you to give us a call.
