The 23rd annual Lesbian and Gay
Pride Run, scheduled for June 26, has
secured yet another sponsor, at a level to
be determined: Books Online, which
promotes the lnsigbtOut book club.
Though final accounts have yet to be
tallied, the 2004 run is on track as ha\-ing
garnered the highest level of sponsorship
in the club' s history.
In otller news from the meeting, the
board decided to move the Saturday run
on July 10 to Pier 45 at the foot of
Christopher Street for a run, brunch and
rally to greet two activists for maniage
equality who are cycling from San
Francisco to New York. The club will pay
$125 for a day permit from the Hudson
River Park Trust, which owns the pier.
Michael Westwood, director of the
Pride Run, announced the new sponsor at
lhe May lO Front Runners board meeting.
The company will donate 2000 papaback
books for the Pride Run, in addition to its
cash contribution, said Kelsey Louie, dub
treasurer, who secured the donation.
Books Online joins HBO, Crunch
Fitness, HIX. GO NYC, Super Runners,
Nikon USA. Heritage of Pride and
Shirtworks as sponsors of the Pride Run.
The
unprecedented
level
of
sponsorship has allowed Front Runners to
offer valuable prizes to finishers. The
prize structure, which has already been
posted on the New York Road Runners
Club and Front Runners websites, is as
follows: First male and female overall
each
receive
Crunch
Fitness
memberships; second male and female
receive a Nikon digital camera and the
third male and female receive $50 cash.
New York Road Runners-recognized
men's and women's member clubs with at
least five finishers compete for separate
but equal prizes: $300 for first place $200
. '
for ~nd and $100 for thrrd. The
Amen can Run for the End of AIDS
(AREA) Award, to the frrst male and
female Front Runner, will be a Crunch
membership, and the Mickey Zacuto
Award, to the first masters male and
female Front Runner, is a $20 Super
Runners gift certificate. Winners of each
age group category get a $l0 Super
Runners gift certificate.

Front Runners
The board thanked Michael for doing
a superlative job this year. Michael said
this is the last year he will direct the Pride
Run, and the board has not yet identified a
new race director, so ideas are welcome.
Michael said he would work with
whomever lhe board identifies to insure a
smooth transition. He said he believes his
biggest achievement bas been to maintain
and strengthen the club's working
relationship with the NYRRC, without
which the race would be impossible.
The July 10 Saturday run will honor
Carrie and Elisia Ross-Stone, lesbian
activists who are riding their bikes from
San Francisco to New York to publicize
marriage rights for gay people. The
couple, who own and operate the legal
education fum Rainbow Law, will be the
focus of a rally organized by club member
Lee Gorman that may attract a substantial
audience as well as media attention. After
lhe rally, Carrie and Elisia have agreed to
offer a seminar for Front Runners on estate
planning and partnership law.
Front Runners planning to bike or run
that morning will meet at 10:00 a.m. at
Pier 45, where there will be a bag check.
Runners are encouraged to use sidewalks
and paths marked for pedestrians rather
than the bike path. Brunch will be served
at Pier 45 after the run, and Rutgers wiU be
open that morning for anyone who wants
to run in Central Park.
In other news, the board learned that
the Variety Show, held April2, earned the
club $2720. The board had previously
decided to allocate these proceeds among
Front Runners, the Charitable Foundation
and the New York City Lesbian and Gay
Anti-Violence Project according to a 5()..
25-25 split But president Ted Paszek said
lhe club should give a more substantial
donation to AVP, which was headliner Lea
De Laria's preferred charity, and the board
approved the sum of $1000 to A VP, with
the remainder to be divided between Front
Runners and the Charitable Foundation
.

Other top1cs d1scussed at the meetmg
were recent Triton triathlon events and a
schedule of possible summer social events.

THE GENERAL: Cinephiles, which
I hope means movie lovers, will love "The
General ," Buster Keaton 's 1927 silent
classic about a runaway train. The film
was based on a real incident during the
Civil War: Union soldiers hijack a
Confederate train and a lone southern
engineer finds himself fighting the lot of
them alone. The plot is built around the
central motif of the rail chase, which
becomes a source of extremely elaborate
comedy. Unlike Chaplin's, Keaton's films
were outdoor movies, giving him the space
to work in often vast panoramas.
