I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the participants of the 28th Annual Front Runners New York Lesbian & Gay Pride Run! For more than a quarter century the runners of New York City have gathered together on the 4th Sunday in June to help FRNY celebrate Pride weekend by running 5 miles in Central Park. Our partnership with New York Road Runners and the Parks Department has made this possible. We thank you for helping us continue this tradition. This year marks an especially proud year for us as we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and the 30th Anniversary of Front Runners New York. We hope that you enjoy today's race and post-race festivities. Our goal is to make this event both competitive and fun; celebrating the LGBT community, as well as, the amazing running talent in New York City. This event could not take place without the support of our extraordinary sponsors. We would like to thank the Vienna Tourist Board, Equinox, Continental Airlines, Urban Athletics, and HX Magazine. Thank you for helping us make this year our biggest ever! We'd also like to say a very special thank you to Mary Wittenberg, Andrea Baumgarten and the entire staff at New York Road Runners . We thank the FRNY membership for their commitment to this race, both financially and as volunteers. Happy Racing and Good Luck! Gabriel "Gabby" Celis, Race Director 3 �FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Pride Run Participant, On behalf of FRNY, thank you so much for supporting our club by running this race. This is a historic year for our club, which celebrates its 30th anniversary, and for the Gay Pride movement, with the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots this month. There is much to honor from our past and much to look forward to in our future. We try to make the Pride Run a very fun event, with lots of music and festive color, while still appealing to the very competitive and active NYC racing community. FRNY is proud that such a wonderful mix of runners of all different ages, speeds and sexual orientation run our race each and every year. Whether straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, you are helping the Gay Pride movement by running our race and-even betteryou are showing by example the huge gift of joy that running brings to people's lives. It's a wonderful thing and something to be proud of. Making this race look as though it took no work or time at all is, in fact, a heavy and burdensome task. I would like to briefly thank some of the people involved in making this event a success for both the club and for the local racing community. First and foremost, Gabriel Celis this year's Pride Run Race Director, worked tirelessly on the publicity, sponsorship, design and overall coordination of the technical and logistical efforts necessary to make this event not only happen but be our most successful race to date. Gabriel inherited a strong tradition of excellence from former race director Michael Orzechowski, who also worked as a consultant on this year's race. Our club's Newcomer of the Year for 2008, John MacConnell, employed his prodigious artistic talent to fine effect in all our Pride materials-p romotional postcards, the T-shirt design and other marketing pieces. A special thanks to Sandi Rowe for harnessing her design prowess in putting together this Pride Program in short and efficient order. Both Katrina Amaro and Megan Jenkins provided invaluable input on all the marketing and promotional materials for this race, and Liz Hines secured Michele Mais from Rock Of Ages for our National Anthem. In fundraising, Melissa Kelson and Mike Terry helped to organize a fun and profitable event at Gym Bar to support our race, and Rob Lyons provided a very generous gift to this year's Pride Run Brunch fundraiser to help make it a financial success. Over the last 30 years, many members have discovered themselves as athletes, competitors and as lesbian and gay people through FRNY. Love, Audrey Hoo and Megan Jenkins �FRONT RUNNERS NEW YORK-WOME N More than 100 women run with Front Runners New York, and we are some of the most active members of the club, participating in NYRR racessuch as the annual Pride Run- as well as triathlons, relay races, cycling events, and other multisport events. FRNY women range in age from their 20s through their 60s, and in most NYRR races FRNY women field an open team, a masters team (40+}, and a veterans team (50+). Just in 2009, FRNY women have been awarded 15 individual age group awards by NYRR, a first-place team award in the Colon Cancer Challenge 4-mile race and a thirdplace team award at the 4-mile Run for the Parks. FRNY has had more runners than any other local running club participating in the first three club points races in 2009, and the women on our team are consistently a strong force in this presence. In addition to pushing themselves to their physical limits on the race course, the FRNY women's team is active in shaping the social and community affairs of the club, including contributing to the newsletter, volunteering with the FRNY Charitable Foundation, planning and hosting social events and fundraisers, maintaining a women's listserv, and providing an extraordinary number of volunteer hours for FRNY and for NYRR. Locations FRNY CHARITABLE FOUNDATION Founded in 1993 to provide goods, services and financial aid to those suffering from AIDS, cancer and other debilitating conditions, the Charitable Foundation of Front Runners New York continues to play a vital role for people in crisis throughout New York. The Foundation considers entries from those in need and selects worthy recipients for various types of aid. The Foundation's big annual event comes each December when it sponsors a group or organization in need for the Community Holiday Wish Baskets Program. In the past, this program has, among other things, given homeless men living with AIDS, hygiene kits so they could 12 better care for themselves. A wide range of causes have been served by the FRNY Charitable Foundation, and by donating a portion of the proceeds from this year's race to the Foundation, Front Runners seeks to keep its mission alive and well. �FRNY SPECIAL AWARDS THE STEVE GERBEN AWARD The Steve Gerben Award honors the first male and female FRNY finishers of the club's annual Lesbian and Gay Pride Run. A five-time president of Front Runners, Gerben owns an illustrious place in both the gay and the running world for his role in founding this race in 1982. At a time when being gay could be scary and threatening for men and women, Gerben offered people a space in which to celebrate themselves and their community while also engaging in healthy athletic activity. His tradition lives on as the club celebrates the 28th running of the Pride Run this June. Gerben and his partner Bob Buckley now split their time between New York and Florida.They both still actively support the club, and Front Runners would like to thank them for all they have done through the years. THE MICKEY ZACUTO AWARD The Mickey Zacuto award is given to the first Front Runners New York male and female master runners (age 40+) in the five mile race. This award has been endowed by Mickey's family in graditude for the love and support she recieved from Front Runners throughout most of her adult life. Mickey was a true activist, as well as a member of FRNY from 1983 until her sudden death in 1993. FRNY fondly remembers her as one of the club's most supportive members as well as its general conscience.
