RE:

FRNY Board of Directors
Dane Grams, Men's Vice President
4 January 2009
Survey Recommendations

Last year the development committee proposed conducting a Front Runners New York
survey to gain insight on the thoughts and opinions of our members, and to better
understand the needs and expectations of those we serve. As the organization
continues to grow, it is critical that we are fostering the best possible environment for
our current members, as well as attracting and retaining new members. The survey was
originally drafted by Cenk Bulbul, and subsequently edited by Dane Grams, Rob Lennon
and the 2008 FRNY Board of Directors. The survey was launched on October 28, 2008
and closed on November 7, 2008. The response to the survey was tremendous with 155
members participating.
The information members provided was insightful and informative, and will without a
doubt help guide us through 2009. In general, a large majority of our members feel the
club is in great shape, that we have strong leadership and are doing the right things. It is
clear that FRNY is an integral part of people's lives. In order to ensure that our
membership continues to have a voice in the development of the club, and so that we
can continue to track our progress over time, I am recommending that the board agree
to task the development committee with making this survey an annual practice.
Please find the full survey results summary attached. Highlights of the results include:
•
•
•

•

•

•

Nearly 60 % of our members joined either because of a friend, through an online
search or because they ran the pride run.
Nearly 1/3 of our members join or stay involved simply because of their love of
running.
Over 55% of respondents think we need to do a better job of welcoming new
comers with either a new member orientation program or new roles designated
to new member outreach.
The top three items people would like to see more of include greater
membership diversity, more volunteerism and community outreach, and out-of
town races and road trips.
Fostering strong connections between our long-term and newer club members
tops the list of where FRNY should focus time and resources. Helping new
members acclimate to the club is a close second.
An overwhelming 95.4% of our members are happy with the current level of
communication .

•
•
•
•

More than half our members would like to see more informa tion about training
in the Front Runner Gram.
41.2% of those surveyed would be willing to contribute additional funds to FRNY
within their means. More than a third is willing to contribu te their time.
Nearly 80% of our members rank board leadership a 7 or higher on a scale of one
to ten . 73% rate their overall FRNY experience a 7 or higher
Nearly 1/2 of those surveyed have joined the club within the last three years.

A survey can be an incredibly valuable tool, especially if you put it to good use. I
believe
it is absolutely critical that we show the membership that we are listening and are
willing to change and improve. I spent a large amount of time reviewing and analyzin
g
the informa tion, and have identified a number of major themes running through
out the
responses, as well as a few particularly good ideas. With that in mind, I would like
to
make the followin g recommendations for the board to consider impleme nting during
2009:
I.

Improve the New Membe r Experience
• Appoint a new members welcome committ ee to develop a new membe r
orientat ion (races, point system, events), a beginner training program
and to serve as 'welcome' ambassadors at all club activities (collect email
addresses and send a welcome packet).
• Consider institutin g a buddy system.
• Require board, race captains, and welcome ambassadors to wear name
tags at Saturday morning breakfasts and other major events.
• In each issue of the newslet ter and our gram, include a "did you know?"
box with one quick bit of informa tion, no matter how basic it seems. (Did
you know? FRNY members receive a 15% discount on any purchases at
Urban Athletics with a current FRNY membership card.)

II.

New Membe r Recruitment
• Address issues of club diversity including age, race, gender and speed.
• Institute a bi-annual bring a friend day-wh ich we can build up to with
free breakfast incentives and door prizes.
• Apply for a Google grant for searches word marketing, so that every time
someone searches for gay and lesbian activities, events, athletics, etc.,
the FRNY website comes up.

Ill.

Build bridge between our club elders and the next generation
• Establish and Emeritus advisory board of former board members to keep
our older members engaged in club activities.
• Task this board with endowing and awarding annual FRNY
scholarship/scholarships to local GLBT college students.

•

Hold more non-bar social activities-movie night, a hiking trip, museum
visit, etc.

•

Reinstitute the "history channel" column in the newsletter with a slightly
different twist ... use it to provide a single photo, or short snippet of "A
Moment in FRNY History" by
member since
___ . Then introduce that member at the following Saturday
breakfast.

IV:

Support and encourage all levels of runners from recreational to elite
• Consider re-evaluating current points system and weight more points
toward participation and volunteerism.
• Encourage more relay teams (and mixed relay teams) at appropriate
events.
• Post scores of all FRNY members, not just the top 5.
• In the newsletter include a 'fun run' route of the week map proposed by
different members.

V:

Improve membership communications and membership value
• Ask the club secretary to provide a brief synopsis of the board meeting at
the first Saturday morning that follows that meeting. Waiting an entire
month for the minutes to appear feels long.
• Include the monthly calendar right in each issue of the newsletter.
• Articles in newsletter can be long ... institute a maximum word limitpeople are more likely to read short snippets.
• Recipe of the month in each newsletter-mayb e submitted by a different
member each month ...something healthy and easy. And why not invite a
member you don't know to dinner.
• Assign a board member to regularly reach out to and check-in with the
injured to keep them abreast of club activities.
• Find more discounts to offer club members.

In conclusion, I hope the board will consider moving forward on these
recommendation s-or assigning them to the development or appropriate committee to
pursue. I also think sometime in January we should provide a brief survey and update to
on our action plan to our members at a Saturday morning breakfast.
Please let me know if you have any questions or need any more information . Thanks.
