BEGINNING RUNNERS CLINIC SET On Saturdays, in conjunction with the Saturday Fun Runs (see listing elsewhere) a beginning runners clinic will be held. The session, led by an experienced member will include stretching exercises and a group run of 1 to 2 miles. This will enable beginning runners (or others) to ask questions of the more experienced runners and will provide them with the same socia setting all members have, since the beginning runners clinic will finish at the same time as the regular Fun Run, and then on to the food! ~illMBERSHIP DIRECTORY IS OUT This week the first Front Runners, NY membership directory is being mailed to members. The directory provides information concerning individual member's running schedules so those who wish to do so, may contact others for training sessions. Any member who wishes to be listed in the directory must first fill out the membership questionnaire which can be received by requesting one from Bob Dubie at 242-4746. READ A GOOD BOOK LATELY? If so, we would like a copy of it if it deals with the subject of running. One of the best ways to learn what running is all about, and to improve your times,(if you race) is to read. With that in mind, Howard has volunteered to set up a Front Runners Library and needs copies of all those running books (no magazines please) you have stashed away. On a regular basis a lis of those books in stock will be distributed, and if you would like to borrow one, just let Howard know. Easy, right? With over 1,100 diagnosed cases of AIDS, almost half are right here in NYC, and of these there are over 200 dead. Although men who are highly promiscuous seem to be the highestrisk group, nearly monogamous men have also been victims. Until it is discovered what causes AIDS and its means of transmission, we are ALL potentially at risk. Almost as serious as the disease itself is how the straight community is regarding AIDS. One only had to be present at the City Council hearings for the Gay Rights Bill to know how some of our opponents regard us. To them we are all disease carriers, and AIDS is our punishment for our lifestyle. We are considered the cause, not the victims, of AIDS. If the gay community is perceived as sitting back and not caring, and of letting these ideas go unchallenged, then we are indeed going to be in deep trouble. The Gay Men's Health Crisis was organized to raise money for research into AIDS and to provide support services for AIDS victims. Since FRNY is one of the largest and most visible gay organizations in NYC, we feel the time has come for us to show that we care and are concerned for our community. Therefore, on Saturday, April 30, the day of the Circus Benefit, we will be holding our own fund-raising benefit for the GMHC, called the AIDS Fund Run. The form enclosed in this mailing gives all the details. WE STRONGLY URGE EVERY MEMBER TO TAKE PART. Let us show, as our name says, that we are in front in our concern, not only for · ourselves, but also for our brothers. A NIGHT AT THE CIRCUS Due to the large response, we have now increased our purchase of tickets for the Gay Men's Health Crisis AIDS Benefit on Saturday, April 30, to 179, which is all we could get together as one block. A few tickets are still available, so call Mike McMahon (h: 242-4527) to reserve your seat. FRNY will have one of the largest representations at this very important event, and it will be an exciting way to cap our own fundraiser for GMHC that morning. WASHINGTON WEEKEND Final planning is under way for our trip to Washington DC as guests of the DCFRs. We'll leave by chartered bus from 72nd St. & CPW at 6:00 PM )harp on Friday, April 22, and make a second pickup from Sheridan Square (7th Ave. & Christopher St. at 6:15 sharp. Bring a sandwich or something to eat, as it will be a nonstop trip, arriving around 11:00 PM in Washington. The cost for the 43-passenger bus is $30 per person, and reservations are being taken on a firstcome, first-served basis in order of receipt of payment. Accommodations willf be with the DCFRs. The Saturday-night meal will be prix fixe at $15.50 per person, including gratuities but not drinks. Our hosts must make final reservations for this affair on Thursday before we leave, so it is necessary to confirm your plans to attend the dinner (and pay for it in advance). Talk to Tom Cook (h: 5357570) about sleeping arrangements (preferences will be considered) and the dinner reservations. It promises to be a great weekend, so get your money in to reserve your bus seat and dinner reservation. GPR'83 - CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS Since this year's race has the potential for having 1,000 runners, it's critical that it be fully staffed with a sufficient number of volunteer workers. We must, therefore, again ask for your active help as a race volunteer. The race will require approximately 100 workers. June 25 seems a long way off, but your early commitment to work will help us with our planning and will also provide some "peace of mind" as race day approaches. So, if you don't plan to participate as a runner, contact Guy (h: 278-8280) or Bill B. (h: 787-0289) now and sign up to work. Please encourage friends, lovers, etc., to help, also. As a worker you'll receive a distinctive volunteer T-shirt and will also be a part of a postrace vounteers-only drawing for merchandise prizes.
