FROM THE RACE DIRECTOR
Dear Athlete,
Welcome to the 31st Annual Front Runners New York
LGBT Pride Run—we are so delighted that you are participating. Whether this is your first time running our race, you
are a veteran of the Pride Run, or even a brand new runner,
you are in for a celebration of our shared commitment to
equality through the great sport of running.
For 31 years, in partnership with New York Road Runners, Front Runners New York has produced this festive race
on Pride Weekend—commemorating the anniversary of the
Stonewall Riots.
The Stonewall Riots were a series of spontaneous, violent
demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the
early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn
in Greenwich Village. The persecution and discrimination of
gays and lesbians in New York City was finally too much to
bear. These riots became the defining event that marked the
beginning of the Gay Rights Movement in the United States
and around the world. And boy, have we come a long way

since those days. Last year, in fact, we ran in celebration
of the historic marriage equality victory in New York. Since
then, no fewer than five Front Runner couples have taken
advantage of in their state right to marry whom they love.
But make no mistake, we still have a long way to go
with regard to reaching full equality. Couples like Rachel &
Sandi still don’t have access to the more than 1,000 benefits granted by the Federal Government. If married Front
Runners Megan & Blossom moved to Ohio they would be
unable to jointly adopt children. And, in the wake of President Obama’s endorsement of marriage equality, we see
marriage being used as a divisive political wedge issue.
But we march (or in our case, run) onward. Your participation brings us one step closer to ensuring that every single
one of us—gay or straight—are all equally recognized citizens of the United States.
In that spirit, I would like to acknowledge our sponsors
Urban Athletics, Blue State Digital, NYSportsMed, Boxers
Sports Bar, Laser Cosmetica, and The Miles by Rob Lennon.
Please support these businesses as they have helped make
this race, and our fight for equality, possible.
I would also like to thank New York Road Runners for

their long-term commitment to this race, and to the LGBT
community—especially Kate Stacey Bernal & Lea Sugimura,
who were in the trenches with us every step of the way.
Finally, I would like to
thank the board and members of Front Runners for
their unwavering support—
they are family in every
sense of the word. And to
the 2012 Pride Run committee members—Jason, Martha, TJ, Seth and Tony—this
wouldn’t have happened
without you.
See you at the finish!

More About This Exciting New Product on Page 15!

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Pride Run Participants:

Megan Jenkins, President, Front Runners New York.

Thank you for being a part of the 31st Annual Front
Runners New York LGBT Pride Run. Whether you are
running, cheering, or volunteering, we are so glad that you
have chosen to celebrate Pride with Front Runners New York
and New York Road Runners this weekend.
Front Runners New York is one of the largest LGBT
running clubs in the world, and we invite you to join us
soon for a fun run, workout, or social event. As you can see
on our schedule of programs on page 13, also available
online, FRNY has something going on almost every day
of the week; and as you will discover, our membership is
diverse and welcoming.
We could not do all that we do without our members
who make FRNY the vibrant club that it is. Also, we are
indebted to the many Front Runners who give their time and
skills to create and lead our programs, as well to FRNY’s
board, for their leadership and hard work all year round.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to the 2012 Pride
Run Director Dane Grams for his vision for and commitment
to the 2012 Pride Run. Dane was ably and enthusiastically
assisted by Jason Fluegge, Martha Marina Dao, TJ Berardo,
Tony Majewski, and Seth Richardson. FRNY is able to put
on this event because of the many FRNY members who pitch
in at every step along to way as volunteers, donors, and

participants.
We are also fortunate to have sponsors who share our
vision for a just and tolerant world: our long-time partner
Jerry Macari of Urban Athletics; Rob Lennon and The Miles;
the crew over at Boxers Sports Bar; and our new sponsors
NYSportsMed, Laser Cosmetica, and Blue State Digital.
FRNY has a long tradition of giving back to the
community. Front Runners has given more than $60,000 to
charity over the past few years including The AIDS Service
Center in NY, SAGE and the It Gets Better Project. This
year we have chosen to support Broadway Cares/Equity
Fights AIDS. BC/EFA is one of the nation’s leading nonprofit
AIDS organizations, contributing to more than 500 AIDS
and family service organizations nationwide and 80
organizations right here in NYC, including GMHC, Harlem
United, Ali Forney and God’s Love We Deliver.
Thank you for all that you do to promote equality and
tolerance for LGBT athletes. Have a great race!
All best wishes,

Megan Jenkins Coryat

BENEFICIARY OF THIS YEAR’S PRIDE RUN
Broadway Care/Equity Fights AIDS
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is one of the
nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising
and grant-making organizations. By drawing upon the
talents, resources and generosity of the American theatre
community, since 1988 BC/EFA has raised more than $195
million for essential services for people with AIDS and other
critical illnesses across the United States. BC/EFA awards
annual grants to more than 400 AIDS and family service
organizations nationwide is the major supporter of the
HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health
Initiative, the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic and other
programs of The Actors Fund.
Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations,
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single
dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to
fulfill its mission. In turn, BC/EFA works hard to ensure
that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on
programs where these hard-earned funds can have the
maximum possible impact.
In 2011, Broadway Cares awarded $9.9 million in grants
to more than 500 AIDS and family service organizations
around the country. This includes support to 123 food
service and meal delivery organizations in 34 states, 375
local AIDS service organizations in 47 states such as health
clinics, housing programs, case management, emergency
financial assistance, harm reduction programs and quality
of life services. Additionally, BC/EFA funded several dozen
larger multi-service organizations such as GMHC, Harlem
United, Ali Forney and God’s Love We Deliver here in New
York City.

A BRIEF PRIDE RUN HISTORY
On February 3rd, 1982, former FRNY President Steve Gerben met with then Parks &
Recreation Commissioner Gordon Davis to discuss the proposed Gay & Lesbian Pride
Run in Central Park. While the city had sent signals that such a race wasn’t going to be
likely, Commissioner Davis agreed to meet with Front Runners anyway. Gerben made
a compelling case for holding the race in Central Park. Paramount to the discussion
was the fact that the race would be open to all members of the community--gay or
straight. After all, a runner is a runner. Five days later permission was granted to hold
New York’s first annual Pride Run in Central Park--and an amazing partnership with
New York Road Runners was born.

After all,
a runner is a runner.
June 26, 1982 dawned partly cloudy, warm and humid. In the wee hours of the
morning, a small group of Front Runners picked up the finish line equipment from
NYRR. You can imagine the emotion as the Front Runners banner was hung over the
start and finish lines. Cheers erupted from the volunteers. At about 9:00, Commissioner
Davis arrived to make sure everything was going smoothly. At 9:30, the runners were
called to the starting line. After reading a brief statement submitted by Patricia Nell
Warren, the author of The Front Runner, the horn was sounded and the race was off.
The tension was incredible as fans waited for the lead car to appear. First over
the finish line was Remulus Della Valle from Millrose AA in 25:13, followed by Chris
Winters from DCFRs in 26:33. First FRNY, and 6th overall, was Steve Brown in 27:56.
The first woman finisher was our own Sue Foster in 31:49. The sense of excitement
and elation from the runners, spectators and volunteers was just incredible. After the
last runners were in, the finish line area was set up for the prize drawings and the
awards ceremony. The first Gay Pride Run ended in triumph. There were 440 entrants
in 1982. The entry fee was $7.00.
A lot has changed over the years, including the entry fees! But the spirit of this race
has never changed. We run together the last weekend in June--gay and straight alike-to celebrate diversity and advance equality. No matter who we might be, or who we
might love we all just want to put on our shoes and run.
(excerpted from The History of Front Runners by Steve Gerben)

BEHIND THE SCENES - MEET KATE!
For 31 years, Front Runners New York has produced the Pride Run in partnership with
New York Road Runners. Recently we had a chance to sit down with Kate Stacey Bernal
from NYRR who handles the day-to-day logistics of the Pride Run to get her perspective on
what makes the Pride Run so special.
Kate, thanks so much for everything you have done to make
this the biggest and best year
ever. What is your exact role at
NYRR?
I am a manager of strategic partnerships.
My role could be described as a relationship manager...making sure our partnerships, including FRNY, continue to flourish

involved with race logistics for several
years now. There is an overwhelming
commitment to customer service and runner experience here at NYRR.

As a straight ally, how important
is it to you personally to have an
athletic event like this?
It is allowing me to be involved with the

I wish I could run
the Pride Run!
and get stronger each year. Front Runners
is the only NYRR club I work with, so that
is why it is such a special relationship to
me.

How long have you been with NYRR?
4.5 years.

Front Runners New York is NYRR’s
longest-term partner, how does it
make you feel to be managing this
race?
It is an awesome experience to work with
FRNY. It has been fascinating to learn the
history and growth of the club. And I am
grateful to feel like I am part of the community. I have become personally committed
to the success of this race.

How is the Pride Run different then
the other races you work on?
It sounds so silly, but the spirit of the event
is fun and special. The race represents
the heart & soul of the city. This is the race
that everyone internally at NYRR wants to
run. My only regret is that I wish I could
run the Pride Run.

What’s the buzz internally about
this race?
We are so thrilled it has once again sold
out--it is overwhelmingly popular. It is
so nice to see the Pride Run step up to
the big leagues. Now we can turn our
focus to making the runner experience is
positive and moving. are so many people
involved here behind the scenes to ensure
the success of this race from Mary to Ann
and of course Lea Sugimura who has been

the ball forward in a very visible way. It is
an overwhelming experience!

You’ve run a Saturday fun run
with Front Runners before...what
were your impressions?
I felt so included and welcome. I loved
seeing all of the new runners being
introduced. I don’t normally run with a
group. But after running with FRNY, I think
I might like to. The 5 miles literally melted
away. Front Runners New York is a very
special club.

Who’s your favorite club?
<Giggles> Really? Of course I’m going
to say Front Runners. But the truth is, we
love all of our affiliated teams.

I understand your husband does a
lot of photography for NYRR...will
Front Runners be featured in more
of your images?
Seriously? You are already everywhere! You are always the most spirited
team, both on and off the course. You are
easy for the camera to spot.

Any final words for this weekend’s
runners?
Have as much fun running as I have had
managing this race.
Front Runners New York would like to
thank Kate, Lea, Ann, Patrick, Mary and
the entire NYRR team for their support!

Because wet shoes stink.

FRNY SPECIAL AWARDS
The Steve Gerben Award
The Steve Gerben Award honors the first male and female FRNY finishers of the club’s
annual Lesbian and Gay Pride Run. A five-time president of Front Runners, Gerben owns
an illustrious place in both the gay and the running worlds for his role in founding this race
in 1982. At a time when being gay could be scary and threatening for men and women,
Gerben offered people a space in which to celebrate themselves and their community
while also engaging in healthy athletic activity. His tradition lives on as the club celebrates
the 29th running of the Pride Run this June.
Gerben and his partner Bob Buckley now split their time between New York and
Florida. They both still actively support the club, and Front Runners would like to thank them
for all they have done through the years.
The Mickey Zacuto Award
The Mickey Zacuto award is given to the first Front Runners New York male and female
master runners (age 40+) in the five mile race. This award has been endowed by Mickey’s
family in gratitude for the love and support she received from Front Runners throughout
most of her adult life. Mickey was a true activist, as well as a member of FRNY from 1983
until her sudden death in 1993. FRNY fondly remembers her as one of the club’s most
supportive members as well as its general conscience.

FRNY MULTI-SPORT
Summer is heating up and so is the Front Runners
multisport team! Whether you’re gearing up for your next
triathlon or just looking to cross train, come join us for a
swim, bike, or run! You’ll get faster in the pool at our Monday
night swim workouts, stronger on the bike at Friday morning
rides in Central Park, and more confident in your endurance
on Sunday morning long-rides in New Jersey. Our team
is directed by USAT Certified Coaches and experienced
athletes.
The FRNY multisport team competes across the tri-state
area and beyond. We’ve done triathlons in Asbury Park,
Harriman State Park, and Montauk. Our cyclists even ride
135 miles from Boston to Provincetown, supporting the
OutRiders Cycling Club. This year, we have 12 members-including three women--participating in the inaugural NYC
IronMan. Wanna show your support? Front Runners will
be hosting a water station at the 18 mile marker of the
marathon portion. We’d love to see you there!
While we have a large number of experienced athletes,
we also have an ever-increasing group of first-timers. Last
year, 50 Front Runners competed in the Jersey Pride Triathlon,
many for the first time. With so many opportunities to train
and race, what are you waiting for? Come and TRI us out
soon!

I’ve got a running
problem. As in I run a
lot. 5K, 10K, 15K, Half
Marathons, 18 milers,
Marathons, Trail Runs.
I run 5 days a week at
varying distances based
on the next race I plan to
conquer. And, my running
problem spread through
my family. I got my brother
involved and his daughter.
When you race and train
for more than 20 years,
you learn a few tricks
of the sport. One of my
favorite pieces of advice
comes from the running
great Hal Higdon, “Always
set up your excuse for poor
performance BEFORE the
race!”
A few years ago, my
brother’s daughter was on
her middle school track
team. There was a practice
scheduled for immediately

1

after school. As the rain
poured down, she figured
that practice would be
cancelled or at least moved
inside. But, as all runners
and, apparently her coach,
know, “You cannot predict
the weather on race day.”
And, so you practice in
all kinds of weather. And
practice they did.
Upon arrivin home, her
fairly new running shoes
soaked through, my brother
told her a trick that we’d
been doing for years…
Stuff your sneakers with
newspaper. The paper will
wick all the water out of
your shoes leaving them dry
and the newspaper wet.
It seems that my shoes
are stuffed with newspaper
any time I’m not wearing
them because they get
water dumped on them at
water stops in a race, I run

through a puddle or snow
or rain, or I train on a hot
day and get them very
sweaty.
It’s getting harder and
harder to find newspaper,
though, and my iPad
doesn’t crunch up and
fit inside my shoes and,
I suspect, that even if it
did it wouldn’t be very
absorbent of water and it
certainly isn’t recyclable.
So,
we
created
SneakerDry! After a race,
after a long run, after a
wet day on the roads,
Crunch it up, Stuff it in
your shoes, Relax a little
(you can’t run all the time),
Recycle, and Run!
