We’re so happy to have you as a Benefactor of Front Runners New York! Because of
your generosity over the years, FRNY continues to be the best running and LGBT club
around. With coached workouts, scholarships, local and out-of-town racing, and a
calendar full of social events, we’re constantly providing the highest quality running
and training programs for our members. None of this would have been possible
without the support of our 800+ members, particularly those like you who have
contributed so much to the team.

As we usher in a new year for the club, I wanted to make sure we’re able to keep you up
to date with all the latest club happenings. Please take a moment to update your
contact information so you’ll never miss our weekly Front Runner Gram or our training,
long run or multisport emails. If you’d like, please also consider making an
additional contribution to the club so we can build upon FRNY’s successes and make 2014
the best year yet!

Thanks so much for your generous support of the club. I hope to see you running in
the park soon!

Dave
FRNY President A note about Benefactor membership: FRNY no longer offers the
Benefactor level; however we will always continue to honor our current Benefactor
members and continue the benefits for the generous members who donated at this level and
who were there when the club needed them most. Your commitment to FRNY will always be
recognized and honored at events year round.
By updating your contact information, you’ll have continued access to the
members-only section of the FRNY website, where you can find the membership directory,
scholarship applications, sign-up forms for long runs and swim workouts, and much more!
You’ll also continue to receive our weekly Front Runner Gram, which keeps you in
the loop on club news such as the Pride Run and Variety Show, training opportunities
such as the Blue Line Run and weekly coached workouts, racing around New York and
beyond, and social events like Front Runner Fridays, the Membership Picnic, and
post-race brunches.
Additionally, your FRNY membership also entitles you to discounts at Urban Athletics and
Super Runners Shops. Members also have the option to be listed in our business
directory, which is published on our website! In 2010, FRNY created the Coaching Fund to
build and bolster the club’s athletic programs, which include free training to all
members--on the track, in the hills, in the pool, and on the bike.

Please consider supporting our coached workouts or any of our events and programs that
hold special significance for you with a donation after updating your contact
information; every little bit helps!

Thank you for being an important part of FRNY. We look forward to running, biking,
swimming, walking and cheering with you in 2014!

email_content: Dear ,

2013 was an exciting year for our women’s team. We placed 2nd in Open B
division out of 74 teams, our 40+ Women’s team was 8th out of 57
teams, and Ruth Loos is nominated for Runner of the Year from NYRR.

2013 was also the year that we got to know each other a little better. We gathered in
the summer for a women’s hosted picnic in the park, shared cocktails and good cheer
after the Pride Run, did a marathon inspirational movie night, and shared festive
merriment at our women’s holiday party.

This year we’re taking new strides to put more emphasis on supporting our women’s team
and having more events focused on providing us with a place to come together
in FRNY. We’ve even set up a women’s Facebook group to help support these efforts (don’t
worry, we’re not doing away with the list serve). Whether your goals are a faster PR or
more camaraderie, there has never been a more exciting time to be a part of Front
Runners New York.

Uniforms & Swimsuits USMS Registration Open for 2014
Don’t forget to renew your US Masters Swimming membership for 2014. As a
reminder, active membership with USMS is required after your first swim with FRNY. For
more information about the process and to renew your membership, visit the USMS website
at http://www.usms.org/reg/
Some Important Things to Note:
Signing up in advance is required in order to attend our Monday Night swim
workouts Click here for the sign-up sheet (always posted the previous
Tuesday morning, usually about 7:15).Be sure to become familiar with our swim
policies.Need a new swim card? Swim workout punch cards can be purchased
online.Let your teammates know what you are training for! Add your upcoming events to
our race calendar.
If you signed up for a Monday swim but can’t make it, please
email multisport@frny.org ASAP so that we can pass the word along to people on
the wait list.

Also, be sure to secure your belongings while you’re in the pool - keeping them in the
locker room may be insufficient, even with a lock. The LIC Y offers small lockers for
valuables across from the counter in the main lobby. Swim Coach Kent Lau

The Monday night swims are on!
We’ll be able to swim at the LIC Y through February. The signup sheet for this coming
Monday will be posted at 7:15 Friday morning. Lane one will be devoted to back-to-basics
next week, as usual for the first Monday of the month. We’ll be working on flip turns
for the remainder of the month, with a clinic in a different lane each week.

We’ll still be having an open meeting to discuss what the pool status will be after
February and other topics, but we’re planning to have it on a Saturday morning following
the fun run so it doesn’t interfere with swimming on the 10th. Details about the exact
time and date will follow as soon as we have them worked out.

    FRNY Multisport Uniforms & Swimsuits

We will be coordinating a uniform order with JackRabbit Sports shortly so that purchases
will arrive before the start of multisport season this spring. We’re also working on the
brand new FRNY swimsuits, which will be handled through SwimOutlet.com. Please keep an
eye on this space for more details to be announced soon. Questions?
Please feel free to email Coach Kent at kentmclau@gmail.com if
you have any questions.

Go FRNY GOOO! To all FRNYers running the marathon on sunday, it
looks like a cold/wet saturday night so with some help from veteran FRNY marathoners
here are a few pre-race and during race tips to stay warm and dry: Runners World has a
list: visit the thrift shop for throw away clothes or items such as: bath robe, pajamas,
sleeping bag or blanket and garbage bags are helpful to sit on while waiting around
and wearing to the startDave Lin says: "I visit Chinatown for a few pairs of cheap
gloves"
Steve Waldon suggests:
1.) Layer with dispensable clothes, both for before and during the race. Everyone knows
to bring along some throw-away sweatpants and sweatshirt to wear before the race starts.
But the fun of throwing away clothes doesn’t have to end there! Buy some $3 Chinatown
gloves, bring along an old beanie, and some $10 arm warmers (or make some from tube
socks) that you can throw away if/when you warm up. You’ve already spent hundreds of
dollars on the race (let’s not even mention the shoes and gear), so don’t feel guilty
about tossing these away mid-race when your body warms up. There are a pair of Asics arm
warmers somewhere in an Albany trashcan that got me brilliantly through the first 10
miles of the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon. Best $10 I ever threw away.
2.) If there’s cold wind, sunglasses can really help. Cold, harsh wind can really hurt
and dry out your eyes so opt for a pair of good running sunglasses, preferably ones
you’ve worn in a race before.
3.) DRAFT! If the current forecast for sundayholds up, it’s looking to be a windy
marathon, which will make air temperatures feel much colder. Keep warm and save energy
by drafting in a group, especially the first 20 miles when the wind will be in your
face. Mike Benjamin adds: for first timers who aren’t aware, that they will
need to check their bags and be in their corral much earlier than in typical NYRR races,
so two layers of throw-aways might be needed. the 1st layer that they can pitch
right before the start and the second as Steve mentions that they can shed during the
race as needed. Rachel Cutler: I personally like the ear cover option vs a
hat and it is much easier to take off and on as needed. Coach Mike: I find Vaseline is
helpful not just for chafing but for keeping you warm. On the tops of your hands, tops
of your feet, quads, hamstrings and calves too! Try to have fun out there, too!

email_content: November 3, 2014 Long Run Director:
Steve Waldonlongruns@frny.org New to long runs with FRNY? Check out the FAQ In This
Issue Congratulations!Quick StatsRecord!Contest WinnersRecoveringMile 24
Front Runners New York P.O. Box 230087 New York, NY 10023
CONGRATULATIONS MARATHONERS! Congratulations to the 171 Front Runners who finished
yesterday’s marathon. Wince with pride as you walk down subway stairs. Ignore the looks
of shock as your co-workers gawk at your meal choices as you devour small mammals at
each meal, because you just ran the most amazing 26.2-mile race in the world -- the New
York City Marathon.

Yesterday’s race was tough. We almost got blown off the Verrazano Bridge, fought gusty
winds on our way to Central Park, and some may have had frozen fingers along the course
-- and I know I couldn’t have been the only one who got sand blown in my eyes and had to
dodge water cups flying across 1st Avenue! But we did it!

Some of you had great PRs, while others struggled and fought just to finish. Whichever
camp you’re in (or somewhere in between), you all completed each mile with the same
determination as past legends like Grete Waitz, Alberto Salazar, Bill Rodgers, Meb
Keflezighi, and Steve Jones. Think about that history, because you’re now a part of it.

As a final word, thanks to everyone who came to run showing the Front Runners singlet.
You’re a part of a great community of runners and you represented Front Runners the best
way possible -- by showing off to 2 million spectators and showing them what we do best
-- RUN! I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to so many of you in your training and I’m
personally happy for each and every one of you who ran. This is an exceptional club that
I’m proud to be a part of. FRNY NYCM STATISTICS The NYC Marathon is an epic journey that
brings together the entire running community. But how did we do as our own little
850-person community?

We had a total of 171 Front Runners representing the club with pride and enthusiasm
through all 5 boroughs. There will be a full race report later in this week’s Gram (and
I may do a quick write-up for tomorrow’s long run email), but for now here’s what the
marathon looked like statistically:

Total Front Runners: 171
Average time: 4:22:32 (10:01 pace)
Fastest: 2:56:19 (6:44 pace, Rich Velazquez)

Total negative splits:14
Total positive splits: 157

Total sub-3: 6
Total sub-4: 66
Total sub-5: 135
Total sub-6: 161 NEW FRNY MARATHON RECORD!
If you haven’t heard by now, Ruth Loos has broken Sue Foster’s 34-year old FRNY women’s
marathon record! Ruth ran a gutsy race through cold, windy conditions to finish in
2:59:53, eclipsing Sue Foster’s 1980 marathon finish time of 3:05:23. In addition the
claiming the new record, Ruth also becomes the first female Front Runner to dip below
the 3-hour mark, a truly remarkable achievement. To put that in
context, Ruth’s achievement placed her in the Top 50 women overall -- out of 20,398
finishers. That puts her in the top .2% (yes, one-fifth of one percent) of the
field. Congratulations, Ruth. You consistently amaze and inspire us as a club with
your hard work, dedication, and ability to consistently push yourself. Your
nationally-competitive performances are out of this world, and we as Front Runners are
lucky to have you run with us. MARATHON PREDICTION CONTEST!

If you’ll recall, for everyone entered in the Prediction Contest, we had three
categories* to win:
Closest guess vs actual timeBiggest negative splitMost even split

I’m pleased to announce that FRNY Secretary BRIAN SCHROEDER guessed closest to his
actual finishing time! Brian predicted a 3:08:00 and finished in 3:08:09 -- a mere 9
seconds off! That’s less than one half of a second off per mile! Congratulations Brian,
for being so in-tune with your fitness, performance, and ability to execute on race
day!!! The biggest negative split came as a bit of a surprise to me, not because of the
hard work and ability this runner has -- but because it was her very first marathon! So
few runners ever achieve the elusive negative split, and not only did SAM
SANDERS do it in her first marathon, she did it by a larger margin than anyone
else! Sam ran a 2:28:02 first half and a 2:25:59 second half, a 2:03 faster second half
(.7% faster). Amazing job Sam! Sometimes the best runs are those where you cruise
through all 26.2 miles, just clicking off miles in a nice groove each mile the same as
the last. Winning our contest for the most even split was another first-time marathoner.
Maybe these newbies have something to teach us after all! It’s none other than MIKI
MARIOTTI who showed us all how to run an evenly-paced marathon. With a first half of
1:57:31 and a second half of 1:56:55, not only was he only 36 seconds off his first half
(.2%), he also negative split (but not as much as Sam, sorry)! Congratulations to our
three winners, who all showed us in different ways how to run an incredible race.
Sometimes the best race is the one where you know exactly what you’re going to do on
race day. Other times we may surprise ourselves and run the second half significantly
faster than the first. And then again, sometimes the best race is where you hit the
correct pace and cruise through like a machine. (* as a percentage of total time)
RECOVERING FROM THE MARATHON I asked our very own Zander Ross for some pointers on
recovering from the marathon. He and Richard Ervais have done over 250 marathons
combined, and they have come up with a plan that works for them to recover after a
marathon. Yesterday’s race was their 4th marathon in two weeks! If there’s anyone you
want to be listening to, it’s them. Here’s what their routine is:
Well, i tried everything, from ice baths....brrrrr! to going right to nap (This last one
NO Good). Richard and I have our favorite thing, which many would thing is a bit
extreme, but it works LIKE THE BEST THING. After we finish, we carbo load a little right
away, within half an hour we eat something like a little bit of Mac and Cheese. But the
best thing is we go out in a 3 hrs walk anywhere. Walking gets rid of the lactic acid,
and breaks up the stiffness of the muscles and prepares them for the next run. Walking
has proven to be the BEST for us. We take Monday off and we go for an easy 4 miles
or so Tuesday. Nothing crazy, just a relaxed run and a few days later we are like
new again. Ice baths work ok also, but by now it’s too late. Light stretching can be
soothing as well, but I keep reading that for long distance runners, stretching is not
so good. I think the best recommendation is, Do Not Stop!!!! Not moving is the worse
thing you can do. Sitting on the sofa, is just really bad. You have to move!!!!
MILE 24 WATER / CHEER STATION Thanks to all Front Runners who showed up to
cheer or volunteer at the Mile 24 water station. Entering Central Park knowing that just
around the corner would be 200+ screaming friends was incredible. Every Front Runner
looks forward to seeing you and you never disappoint. Your long day and hard work
carried 50,000 runners to the finish line. THANK YOU!

Sincerely,
Election Officers Candidates for President
Gilbert Gaona I started running with Front Runners San Diego in 2007. When I moved to
New York, FRNY was the first place I turned to for a sense of belonging, comfort, and
familiarity. I have been fortunate to experience that the club is more than just a
running group, to many of us it is our family.
I believe that participation and volunteering are the cornerstone of the club. In recent
years the X-Country meet struggled to drive participation, which resulted in talks of
canceling it all together, because of this I decided to become one of the Co-Directors.
We were instrumental in creating the largest and most successful meet ever, increasing
the registration from 8 in 2013 to 100 in 2014! I look forward to working with the Race
Captains to continue supporting our clubs involvement in the running community.
Some of my other accomplishments and activities in the club include being aCoaching
Committee Timing Assistant, club representative to Team NY, Gay Games Committee, Reach
the Beach Relay Captain, one of the few members to receive the Inger-Jo Berger
Participation Award, and most importantly a friend and supporter to fellow members.
Outside of FRNY I am a Starbucks Store Manager and a former Sergeant of the Marine
Corps. From these experiences, I have learned to be proud of who I am and what I
represent. I have learned that it is important to make everyone feel welcomed and be
genuinely interested in where they are coming from. I am also able to inspire others to
become active and help create a fun and safe environment where people want to be
involved.
I look forward to the opportunity of leading the Board of Directors. It is important to
me that we work with our members and lead from a positive place. I am excited to
continue welcoming the new members and growing our multifaceted club. This will require
working closely with the committee chairs and ensuring an increase in women’s
involvement. In the words of the Gay Games President, "The stronger and more active our
women are, the stronger we are as a community."
I would love to be given this opportunity to represent and serve the club as President.
Thank you for your consideration.

Steve Waldon When I joined Front Runners in 2009 I found an amazing club where, unknown
to me at the time, I would form my closest friendships and relationships. I started as a
racer for the club and became a cheerleader for others, an enthusiastic volunteer, and
ultimately a leader within the organization.
I have always put my energy into programs that benefit the entire club. I have never
favored fast vs. slow, track vs. distance, racer vs. social runner. From my legitimate
love of running and the club, I have enjoyed helping others succeed in their own running.
Now I would like to continue my involvement on a bigger level: as president. Steering an
organization of 800+ takes experience and commitment, and I believe I’m the best
candidate to lead the club with context and confidence.
In official roles I’ve twice been race captain, participated in FRNY’s It Gets Better
video, helped create the "bucket list" Achievement Award, served as a two-term long run
director to grow the program to previously unimaginable levels, organized amazing Blue
Line Runs in NYC + Boston, co-directed the Brooklyn Pride 5K, and represented FRNY at
NYRR Club Council Meetings. If you have participated in these, you know the level of
commitment I bring.
Leading means more than simply maintaining status quo. It takes vision to see other
opportunities. In addition to continuing our great running and multisport programs, I
would like to enhance the FRNY experience by bridging the running and social aspects of
the club. I’m often seen as a serious racer, but the truth is that I enjoy the social

and purely fun aspects of running as much as anyone else -- I have to, since all my
friends are runners! I would love to use my connections to the greater NYC running scene
and other clubs to get FRNY involved in community-building events. Want to participate
in the Dashing Whippets "Beer Mile" or run through the midnight streets and bridges of
Brooklyn? Has the Superfund Super Run piqued your interest? Pub runs through
Williamsburg? Perimeter Relay Race around Manhattan? Let’s run *and* party together next
year!
I’m limited to 400 words, which honestly isn’t enough! Email me or pull me
aside at the next Wednesday/Saturday fun run, Tuesday/Thursday speed workout, or long
run -- I attend them all! I’d love to answer any questions you have. Candidates for
Men’s Vice President
Dan Ferguson When I joined FRNY in 2011 I couldn’t have imagined the impact the club
would have on my life. At that time I’d only been running for a year, so I have FRNY to
thank for the unforgettable experiences I’ve since had as an LGBT athlete: running my
first marathon, competing in Gay Games 9, and even winning first place male-male couple
in Brooklyn Road Runners’ Valentine’s 5k. But more importantly, FRNY has given me a
running family: close friends, training partners, and the other half of that male-male
couple. If elected Men’s VP, I’ll work to ensure FRNY continues to be the same home for
the entire LGBT running community that’s allowed so many, including myself, to flourish.
It’s work I’ve already had the satisfaction of contributing to. In 2013, I served as one
of the club’s Multisport Coordinators, where I supported FRNY’s popular swim program.
This year I became a Race Captain. In that role I’ve helped promote and organize
activities that combine the club’s commitment to both running and team-building,
including brunches after the NYC Half, Grete’s Great Gallop, and other NYRR points
races, and also excursions to local club races in Hoboken, Queens, and the Bronx. I was
Co-Race Director of the sold out FRNY-sponsored 2014 Brooklyn Pride 5k, which was the
largest and most successful in the event’s 17-year history. I’m also a member of the
FRNY History and Archives Committee, which is dedicated to preserving and honoring the
club’s rich traditions, from 1979 to the present and beyond. And since joining I’ve
proudly represented FRNY in over 100 races, winning the club’s Achievement and
Participation Awards.
If elected to the 2015 FRNY board, I will work to further integrate social activities
into the club’s racing program, which I hope to expand to include more local club, outer
borough, and out of town races. Second, I will promote the club’s successful training
programs--hills, indoor and outdoor track, long runs, and multisport--which help members
build close friendships as they develop together as athletes. And third, I will support
the club’s traditional social offerings, which offer important opportunities to get
together outside the context and pressure of running. These, along with the fun run and
brunch, where the club as a whole comes together each week, comprise my vision of FRNY
as a supportive, engaged LGBT community dedicated to the athletic achievement of its
members.
Fernando Aguilar I’m very glad you’re only allowed a 400-word entry, because I only have
a few words to say and they are.......I LOVE THIS CLUB. Period. This club and the members
in it have been like a surrogate family for me ever since I joined. Since then, I have
recruited many friends I love to join the club also, so that they can share in the
magic! I tell everyone in my birth family about everyone in my surrogate family-reveling
in all the blood, sweat, and tears we shed together, but also savoring the life we live
together outside of sports. I only want the best for this club and its members, and with
that in mind I would rise to the occasion as Men’s VP.But this submission really
shouldn’t come as a huge surprise; this is the direction I have been traveling in after
landing here at Front Runners. I’ve wanted to be a part of the club with respect to all
aspects including leadership for a very long time. Having been injured this past year
and only now returning, I have been out of commission workout-wise. But that has not
stopped me from pitching in. I helped to put together a Cherry Tree relay team, "The 3
Amigos," a track meet relay team, "The Gaytinos" (or Las Reinas), a trip to Six Flags,
and many club social functions and activities I have been proud to be a part of this
year, regardless of my running setback.Otherwise, I generally have been very involved
with the team, having done indoor track for 2 seasons now, as well as outdoor track,
hills on Tuesdays, fun runs on Saturdays, and of course Monday night swims! I was
honored to lead 2 bike rides this past summer, during one of which was the first time 4
out of 8 people riding did upwards of 65 miles into NJ with a 13% incline....WOOOHOOT!!!
I am so proud of their accomplishment and want to continue to be a part of encouraging
and supporting our fellow teammates and family members. I do believe with all this club
knowledge and involvement I would be a superb leader so with that and with all my heart
please accept this submission and consider me for next year’s Men’s VP.
Candidate for Women’s Vice President Stacey Cooper I have seen Front Runners go
through many changes since I joined in 2008 and I have never been more excited about the
direction this club is going in than I have been now. I want to make sure that I help
lead the way for even more exciting growth in the upcoming year.
As Women’s Vice President I want to continue reaching out to our female membership to
encourage more involvement in all Front Runner events from racing to socializing. We’ve

made great strides as a club in the past few years to do this but I think we’re at a
crucial point where we can really get more women involved and more importantly keep them
interested and engaged.According to Running USA, an organization that tracks
participation in races in the United States, women accounted for 56 percent of race
finishers in 2012. In contrast, the Front Runner membership is only made up of 21
percent women. This is also the approximate average of Front Runner female finishers in
NYRR races. I have ideas on how we as a community can reach out to our women and find
the best ways that will support them and always make them feel welcome at all of our
events. But being Women’s VP doesn’t mean just supporting the women of this club. One of
the great things about Front Runners has been its inclusivity. The support I have
received from everyone in this club has been tremendous and I want anyone who shows up
to feel that support as well.During my two years as a race captain I have had the
opportunity to cheer you on from a distance and along the sidelines. The accomplishments
of the runners in this club have been amazing and I could not have been more proud to
write the race reports and spread the news about how amazing everyone in this club is. I
want to continue to cheer all of you on and find more ways to support your running
endeavors as the Women’s Vice President in 2015. Candidate for Treasurer Andrew
Cunningham For over thirty-five years Front Runners New York has supported our members
and celebrated our achievements. I am proud to call myself a Front Runner and be part of
such a wonderful family.
The success of the club depends on a strong board, generous volunteers and sound
finances, without which all of the wonderful programs we benefit from would not be
possible. This has never been truer as the club continues to grow in membership size.
I am an accountant and auditor with over 15 years work experience in the financial
services industry and as such I know the importance of sound financial data and what it
takes to work as one team. If elected as Treasurer I will build on the excellent work of
the previous holders of this office and ensure that we continue to have the ability to
support our running programs for all of our runners.
If elected my areas of focus will be:- Deliver the budget on time and develop a forecast
for the next three years to help the Board plan for the future;- Improve the
accessibility of financial and non-financial information;- Support runners of all
abilities in pursuit of their goals through our coaching and scholarship programs;- Work
to increase the diversity of the club and define what our charitable goals should be,
including the use of our legacy funds.
I have been part of the FRNY community for the past four years, joining the club shortly
after I moved to New York. My fellow runners have become friends and have inspired me to
run faster and stronger as a proud LGBT runner. I have benefitted from the first class
coaching programs and experienced the joy of running with amazing team mates, including
at the Gay Games where we wore our jerseys with pride. I have experienced the emotion of
marching together during Pride and most importantly I have had fun on and off the road.
I appreciate the dedication and passion it takes to run the club, having seen first hand
the time and effort that goes into our training programs, long runs and volunteer
activities such as hosting water stations. I would like to volunteer my skills to help
continue the success and relevance of the club and would be honored to serve as your
Treasurer.

Craig Goodwin-Ortiz de Le?n When I joined Front Runners New York in 2011, I was
preparing for my first 10K (my second road race ever) and had a dream that I could
finish a marathon one day. I was looking for a running club because I was tired of
running alone and wanted to make friends with different backgrounds and goals. In the
last three years, I have had the opportunity to make new friends and achieve goals I
never thought possible. I have also had the opportunity to give back to the club in
different ways. I would now like the opportunity to serve the club’s membership on the
board. My technical and management skills make me well suited for the position of
Treasurer.
In my current accounting position with the not for profit organization Asian Americans
For Equality, I am responsible for maintaining accurate financial records as well as
preparing reports for management and governing authorities. I am well versed in
Quickbooks and Microsoft Excel.
For over ten years I managed quick service restaurants and trained managers how to
operate efficiently. As a leader, I had to make decisions that affected 60 employees.
In 2012, I was asked to be an elections officer, a role which I filled for two years. In
2013, I was asked I lead the annual FRNY Cross Country Meet and this year, with Gilbert
Gaona, the meet had over 100 registrations, the most ever! I also regularly assist as
gatekeeper for swim practices and help out with Saturday morning bagels.
Front Runners New York has helped me change my life through running. I would like to
serve as your Treasurer in 2015 to help as many of you meet your goals as possible!
Candidate for Secretary Brian Schroeder It has been a pleasure serving as Secretary this
past year, and I would like the opportunity to continue to grow in the role in 2015.
Front Runners has been a big part of my life since I joined two years ago, and I like

being able to give back to the club and be involved in the work we do.
As Secretary, I have striven to organize the materials for our Board meetings and send
them out at least 24 hours beforehand, and to take accurate minutes that can give a
sense of the meetings to anyone who was not able to attend. I have attended every Board
meeting in the past year and all but one the year before.
I joined Front Runners in July 2012, and I was excited to find a welcoming community
where I could learn more about running (and feel the marathon buzz) and discover new
friends. Between the fun runs, racing, helping with bageling, hosting the Cherry Tree
brunch, serving on the Membership Committee and now on the Board, I enjoy being involved
in Front Runners. I hope to have the opportunity to continue serving as Secretary in
2015. Candidates for Director at Large Brenton Bellomy My name is Brenton Bellomy, and I
am seeking the position Director at Large, Men, for FRNY in the 2015 year. I began
running with Front Runners New York during the month of September 2013. Reflecting
on my journey, I find myself in the company of not only fabulous runners, but also
friends, coaches, mentors, dinner buddies, and shoulders to cry on. I say my mind
is with running, but my heart is in FRNY.
Joining Front Runners New York was truly written in my stars, and the past year with
FRNY has changed me for the better. I would go as far to say that it saved my
life. I came to FRNY seeking friends, but discovered such a wonderful group of
individuals, living full lives, rich in conversation and warmth. It is these
traits I wish to perspire myself and look to foster in those I meet, both new and
familiar.

My involvement has grown exponentially since joining FRNY. I have had the
wonderful opportunity to run for FRNY during many races and relays such as Reach the
Beach, NYRR Night at the Races, and races held in my home state of Alabama. In
addition, I also had the opportunity to volunteer for FRNY Mile 24 Water Station & NYC
Half Marathon Water Station. I have also found joy in coordinating and securing spaces,
volunteers, and food for many FRNY sponsored events. I have been called, "Event
Liaison." It is because of those activities and my fellow runners, that I AM a
better runner. I wish to foster that community and warmth, continuing to help us
grow, change and mold in the coming year.
I received an email a few months ago informing me that I would have direct access to our
fairly new FRNY Instagram. This, yes this, has been one of my biggest joys as a
FRNY member. We have the opportunity to photograph, during events, but now I had
the opportunity to represent a wonderful LGBT running club in NYC. And a beautiful
one at that! I am honored.
I wish to fulfill and exceed expectations as Director at Large, Men, and not only
uphold our standards as an LGBT running community, but to also seek the best within
us. I wish us to be gracious, kind, competitive and never meet someone in a full
room, and allow them to be a stranger.

Diane Lowy Front Runners New York has been around for 35 years. Through the History and
Archive team and the Gay Games in Cleveland, my awareness of what that means is much
deeper than it was a year ago. I feel lucky to be one of thousands of people who found
this club.
One Saturday morning in 2006, I showed up at a Fun Run and met a few people. Years of
casual decisions to show up to more events led me from one fabulous experience with the
club to another.
Having personally shifted my involvement over the years from a fair weather Front Runner
to a board member, I understand that the reasons why people join and why they remain
members changes and evolves over time. Being welcoming and supportive of every member’s
goals-- both social or athletic-- is a part of what being on the board is all about.
If given the opportunity to be one of the Directors at Large, I would be honored to
continue supporting the mission of Front Runners New York as a board member.

Elke Gasselseder When I joined Front Runners, I wasn’t very comfortable in a group
environment. But I liked running enough to get me to fun runs every Saturday and I
slowly started to make friends. In the beginning, running was mostly about myself. I ran
to escape evil co-workers, I ran to feel better about myself, and I ran because I loved
Central Park. The park became my green oasis in a still strange and new city.
Over the years, races became about more than just PRs. I ran to earn points for MY team
and I ran so I could be with my friends. The club ended up becoming my oasis. A place
where you can be sweaty, salty and worn out tired and fit right in with everyone else.
Running away turned into running toward something. Today, I feel as though I belong.
I’d like to pass on that feeling of belonging to other people, I’d like to give back to
FRNY, that’s why I would like to nominate myself for the position of Director at Large.
After so many years as a member, I feel like it’s time to step up to the plate and be
more involved.

    Gram Submission Guidelines

at a distance, or other achievement, complete
this form for the Race Captains. Reports received by 5 PM on Tuesday will
be included in Thursday’s Gram.
To submit an activity, event or announcement, email Dave. Please note that only

events produced specifically for and by Front Runners will be published. All Gram
announcements are at the Board’s discretion. To Russia With Love "To
Russia With Love" started out as a small initiative of the club to show solidarity with
our sister LGBT community in Russia. With an overwhelming response both within FRNY and
outside, we not only met the initial goal of running the distance between NYC and
Moscow, but have nearly tripled it!

In the short month of the project, 268 runners, walkers and swimmers have logged a
whopping 13,376 miles to raise awareness for the inequality that forces the Russian LGBT
to live in fear. However, perhaps our biggest accomplishment as a club is that we have
inspired 129 non-FRNY members to join our community in this show of support.

The project has received considerable local and national media coverage so far Huffington Post, amNewYork, Runner’s World, and NYRR - with over 850 people in 24
countries viewing our video, including a version with Russian subtitles, and poster
signs for the project reaching all the way to Sochi. We have also been in constant
contact with the Russian advocacy group RUSA-LGBT, which has been instrumental in our
efforts to spread the message across the Atlantic.

Front Runners New York, we have a lot to be proud of.

THANK YOU to everyone who logged miles and helped us in getting the word out. Putting
this together was a team effort - Special thanks go to Kent Lau and Da Ping Luo for
making the logo and the video, Michal Kaczmarski, Alex Bush and John Brown for their
help with press-releases and contacting media, Jim McCarrick and Kerri Fox for reaching
out to the Russian community, Michelle Mazzara for managing the web page, Connor Essick
for crunching the numbers, and Peter Macari, Joe Lim, Steven Waldon, Ekong Ekong, Jason
Fluegge, Michael Cavaliere, Katrina Amaro, Michael Klein, Bryce Rudyk and Daniel
Ferguson for much needed help along the way. And of course, thank you to Jonathan
Schneiderman for conceiving and organizing this huge effort.

Way to go, team!!

Tomorrow! Registration for the 2014 Brooklyn Half Marathon
opens tomorrow, January 22nd, at NOON! The race is scheduled for Saturday, May
17 at 7am.

In recent years the race has sold out within hours of registration opening and this year
promises to be no different. In addition, though it isn’t yet official, the race is
almost certain to be an NYRR points race again. It’s a great half marathon on a great
and fast course, ending in Coney Island, where FRNY has traditionally indulged in some
much-deserved post-race celebratory partying!

So if you’re planning to run be sure to register early, and if you’re not sure:
register! We love to have a big turnout for points races and this one isn’t to be missed!

If you’re interested in a scholarship for the race, apply here (FRNY.org
registration required).

email_content: Dear ,
Thank you for joining Front Runners New York this past year. We hope you
benefitted from being a part of this extraordinary club in 2014 and that you’ll join us
again in 2015.
If you have any questions about the club and the benefits of being a member, please
don’t hesitate to reach out (membership@frny.org) to us!

Your current membership expires on December 31st and we hope that you will renew your
membership for 2015. The club relies on the support of its members to sustain our
coached workouts, social events, scholarships, and home at Rutgers Church. Membership is
also required to participate in any of our coached workouts, participate in club
recognition and awards, and vote in our elections.
We look forward to running, biking, swimming, walking, and cheering with you in
2015!
Our membership form for 2015 is now available online, and we hope that you will
continue to be a part of this amazing club. Your dues help support a variety of events
and programs throughout the year, including our annual Track Meet at the Armory,
Cross-Country Meet at Van Cortlandt Park, Awards Night in January, the Pride Run in
June, our coaching programs, and much more. By renewing your membership, you’ll
have continued access to the members-only section of the FRNY website, where you can
find the membership directory, scholarship applications, sign-up forms for long runs and
swim workouts. You may also continue to receive our weekly Front Runner Gram to
keep you informed to club news and upcoming events. Your FRNY membership also entitles
you to discounts at Urban Athletics and Super Runners Shops. Members also have the
option to be listed in our business directory, which is published on our website. When
you choose to upgrade to a Silver, Gold, Diamond, or Platinum membership you’ll receive
a greater tax deduction and also provide greater support to FRNY programs.
Certain membership levels also feature benefits such as a free FRNY singlet, guaranteed
entry into the Pride Run, or a complimentary breakfast card (see membership form for
specifics). Please note that all membership dues are fully tax-deductible, except where
noted, and will expire on December 31, 2015. Renew your membership today!
Thank you for being a part of Front Runners New York this past year. We look forward to
running, biking, swimming, walking and cheering with you in 2015!
