Race Report
It was a cold and quiet holiday weekend this past week. But a handful of Front
Runners embraced the elements and set out to confront treacherous race courses in New
York and beyond.

On Saturday, three Front Runner men headed up to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx for the
inaugural Christmas Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K. The races consisted of one,
two or four dizzying loops around the fabled hills, rocks and trails of the park.
In his comeback race after a long injury, Daniel Guralnick ran the full marathon,
earning himself a huge 16" candy cane award. It’s great to have you back,
Daniel! Dave Lin ran the half, getting a slightly smaller but no less impressive
12" candy cane. And earning a 10" candy cane was Manja Srinivasaiah, who conquered
the 10K. Congrats to all of you!

And since it wasn’t cold enough in New York, Joe Lim headed down South--way down

South--to run in the Antarctic Ice Marathon. Billed as the only official running
event within the Antarctic Circle on mainland Antarctica, the race featured a course
comprising of snow and ice throughout, an average windchill temperature of -20C (-4F),
strong Katabatic winds, and an altitude of 3,000 feet. Despite these hazardous
conditions, Joe breezed through the 26.2 miles in an impressive 8:02:07, coming in 30th
overall. Amazing run, Joe!

Last week’s race report left out that Daniel O’Neil, one of the 39 "hot" Front Runners
who raced the Ted Corbitt 15K, raced that distance for the very first time.
Excellent job, Daniel, and welcome to Club 15K!

This weekend:
The ever-popular Emerald Nuts Midnight Run is this Friday at Midnight. As of press
time, registration is still available. This unscored race counts toward guaranteed
entry for *either* the 2011 or 2012 ING New York City Marathon.

Also, for those of you who’d like to start the year off with some trail racing, the FREE
New Year’s Marathon/Half Marathon/10K/Relay is on Saturday in Van Cortlandt Park.
Visit http://thenewyearsmarathon.com/ for more details.
Training TipDress appropriately when running in very cold weather. Wear layers so
that you can take a layer or two off in case you get warm. Your inner most layer
should be a water-wicking synthetic material-don’t wear cotton-it will just hold the
sweat. Your outer most layer should be wind (and water) resistant. Your
hands and feet get cold the quickest, so be sure to wear gloves, and you can lose a lot
of heat from your head, so wear a hat. If you don’t like to wear hats, at least
wear a headband/earmuffs to cover your ears. FRNY
Multisport Initiatives Team New York Aquatics is hosting a 1 hour swim on January 9 and
30th. There is a relay option, if you don’t want to swim the entire hour.
For additional information, click here http://tnya.org/ohs/We are working on bike deals
and group cycling classes with http://ridebrooklynny.com/ They will be speaking on
Saturday, January 15 after the fun run. If you think you might want to buy a bike,
now is the time. The more people who buy a bike, the better a deal we get.
They specialize in Cannondale and Orbea and can help with any price point. If you
are considering this, please let us know. Please e-mail us at multisport@frny.org for any
additional information, race questions, or to be added to the weekly multisport e-mail
list.

Since the spring of 2005, FRNY has been incredibly lucky to have former club president
Kelsey Louie as coach of the club. Since that time he has been joined by Chris Stoia as
assistant running coach and by Rachel Cutler and others on the multisport front. This
has required amazing and sustained volunteer efforts, so a major shout-out to them
all! Please consider giving to the coaching fund when renewing your membership today

2011! Weekly Race Report
This weekend’s slightly warmer temps were blown away by 39 HOT Front Runner performances
at the increasingly popular 15k distance in the Ted Corbitt 15k. The men were led by a
sub-6 min/mi performance from Gabe Benroth (54:53, 3rd Age, 23rd overall). The next four
Front Runners showed the formidable force that the team has become - each performing
better than 66% age graded, and the first four performing at > 70% age graded!
Michael Sanderson (58:40, 11th Age, 71.9%), Chris Stoia (58:55, 7th Age, 77.4%),
Kieran O’Mahony (1:00:07, 70.2%) (in his last performance for now as a resident of NYC),
and Kevin Masse (1:01:47, 66.6%) rounded out the first five. Enjoy life across the pond,
Kieran - we’ll see you on the roads, for sure! In a strong return following an awesome
NYC Marathon performance, Rachel Kliegman once again led the women in the chilly 9.3
mile race (1:11:55). She was followed by some of Front Runners usual suspects:
Megan Jenkins (1:13:30), Lynn Canfield (1:20:03), Annie Eckstein (1:35:09), and Mariela
Lombard (1:35:10). Awesome work, ladies!
The NYRR Honor Roll also includes stalwarts Dave Pitches ( 1:09:59 , 3rd Age) and Sam
Lafata ( 1:52:18 , 9th Age). In amazing PR news, Liam O’Roark shaved 7 minutes and
21 seconds off his prior PR at the distance to finish in 1:25:51 . Shout outs to

first-time-at-the-distance racers Stephen Cochran ( 1:31:06 ) and Beth Strickland (
1:51:20 ). And certainly, one cannot forget the message they saw three times: "If
you’re in Hell, keep Running!" - Thanks Martha and AJ for the much needed cheers on the
course, and also to Lori, Steve and Ted for your enthusiasm (and photos) out
there!Further south, in Chattanooga, TN, Jonathon Warner blazed through the Lookout
Mountain 50 mile trail course with over 6300 ft of climbing in 8:42:16 to finish in 11th
place overall. Will anything stop Jonathon? Doesn’t look like it!
Congrats! The next NYRR race is the annual Emerald Nuts New Year’s Eve Race.
Also those intrepid runners who brought you the turkey-day 10k/half/marathon are
bringing it back for Christmas. Happy Holidays all!
Christmas Fun Run
On Saturday, December 25, Rutgers Church will be closed to FRNY. The fun
run will still take place, leaving from the home of Miles Harter (253 West 73 St., Apt.
10J, right across the street from Rutgers) at 10 AM. If you plan to attend please
RSVP to Megan at mbjenkins@gmail.com. Also, please plan to arrive no earlier than
9:30 AM. Training Tip
When running on a treadmill, be sure to use your normal armswing. Many people run too
close to the console. Treadmills are long enough for you to move back a little to allow
for your regular stride and armswing. Also, make sure that you always have it set on at
least 1% incline in order to account for the wind resistance when running outside.

Retro and Modern President’s Breakfast: 1/1/11 and 1/8/11 Until about a decade

is free to membership. FRNY Multisport Initiatives Swimming continues on Monday nights
at 8 PM. Please see calendar at www.frny.org for other training details. If
you have any questions about training or upcoming events, please contact
multisport@frny.org. We are also developing a relationship with a Brooklyn bike shop
that can offer us bike discounts and studio time for winter group rides, on
computrainers. The team has also been extended a special deal on wetsuits. Please

email multisport@frny.org for more information on this, to share your upcoming race

Race Report Jingle bells, Santa
smells, forty miles away... Oh, what fun, it is to run in a 4-mile
race today... Thousands of Santa, elf, or reindeer wannabes
descended on Brooklyn, many en
costume, last
Saturday to work up a sweat at the first ever NYRR Jingle Bell Jog,
a new incarnation of the Holiday 4-Miler. "New" means much pricier
but you got a polyester tech shirt for your $40-50. Brooklynite
Jeremy Dasher Reiss crossed the finish line first for the club
(25:54, 73rd male), pursued by Patrick Dancer Guilfoyle (26:12, 3rd
in age group!), Kyle Comet Mammarella (26:14), Michael Blitzen
Grzelecki (26:33), and Peter Cupid McGrane (28:27). Holly
Vixen Brewster led the ladies (34:25), followed up by Danielle
Prancer Pepitone (36:30) and, in her first outing at the distance,
Beth Donner Strickland (47:45, baseline PR). It’s great also to
report that Rachel Rudolf Cutler, on the way back from injury,
carefully tested the race waters. We look forward to Rachel’s
return to full speed in the coming season. Joining
Patrick on the NYRR honor roll for finishing in the top ten of
their age groups were Sam Santa Lafata (43:02, 2nd in age), Paul
Tiny Tim Racine (31:25, 2nd in age), and Brooklyn’s own Joe Natale
Criscione (30:04, 9th in age). A
shout-out goes to the cheerleaders responsible for all the "Go
Front Runners!" heard on the course, and thanks to Jeff Wise Man
Werner and Matt Myrrh Tivy for standing in the cold to hand out red
apples and strange green bagels to finishers. On
Sunday, the Pete McArdle XC Classic 15K provided a second race
opportunity for the weekend. Seven hardy members were undeterred by
pelting rain and gusty winds as they completed three, count-em,

three 5K loops in the hills of Van Cortlandt Park. Remarkably,
every FR finisher made the NYRR honor roll, and four landed on the
podium to collect awards! Inger
Berger (2:11:00) and Sam Lafata (1:59:20) each took first place in
their respective age groups, and for Sam it was the second award of
the weekend. Dave Pitches (1:19:56) took second in his group, and
Sandi Rowe (1:37:47) took third in hers. Making the honor roll:
Mark Mascolini (1:25:53, 4th in age), Bernd Erpenbeck (1:19:56, 8th
in age), and Tim Guscott (1:16:27, 5th in age and fastest Front
Runner). Congratulations and way to represent,
everyone! Oops,
maybe we forgot to hit the second page of FR finishers of the Joe K
10K last Saturday! Belated kudos to Sam Lafata for his 8th place,
dean’s-list-worthy finish. And our spies for that same weekend
didn’t get wind of another 50-mile notch in Michael Gonzalez’s
fuel-belt - 12:53:01 at the North Face 50-Mile Endurance Challenge
Championship in San Francisco - and Brad Gayman’s result for the
50K championship distance (5:38:39, 3rd male 20-29). You two guys
are ultra-running nuts. Sam, you’re just a regular running
nut. The
FR club points competition is coming down to the wire, with just
one more NYRR race this year, the Ted Corbitt 15K in Central Park
on Sunday. (You can still register for the race in person at NYRR
but it is near capacity.) Check your points total here: FR_Points_Spreadsheet and
report any discrepancies to racecaptains@frny.org.
Awards for the top scorers in the indicated age groups will be
presented at Awards Night on January 22. That’s
it for another week. See you on the roads. Bundle up, it’s cold out
there! Training Tip
It
is easier to remember to hydrate during the warmer months, but keep
in mind that it is equally important to remain hydrated even in
cold weather. It is harder to do because water fountains don’t
work. Be sure to drink before you go out for a run and right
afterwards. For those of you in the Armory, you have probably
already learned that it’s important to bring a bottle of water with
for the rest periods in between intervals--keep doing
so. Buy

Night will be 6-10 PM on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Union
Theological Seminary at 3041 Broadway (@121 St). Awards night
includes cocktail hour, open bar all night, a three-course dinner,
and a presentation celebrating FRNY’s accomplishments in
2010. We
never want money to be a barrier to participation, so we are
offering tickets at a number of levels this year. The Bronze
Medalist ticket at $70 covers the per person cost of the event. If you want to help
subsidize the participation of others who
cannot afford the $70 ticket, please consider purchasing a Gold or
Silver Medal level ticket. Gold and Silver Medalists will receive
a tax deduction and be listed in the program. Because
of the generosity of our members, we are able to offer a limited
number of subsidized tickets at $40. As with any Front Runner
event, please email president@frny.org if you would like to attend
but financial concerns are an obstacle. If you have any questions
regarding online registration or your tickets, please contact Megan
Jenkins at mbjenkins@gmail.com.

This
week’s question -- An artist who likes to "excite and challenge"
viewers, this Front Runner (who has been profiled as a "member of
the month") once dressed as candy for Halloween, employing red

shoestring licorice as hair and asking the streetwalkers if they
wanted to "trick or treat." Can you name this Front Runner? All
correct responses emailed to president@frny.org by 5 PM tomorrow will be
considered for the drawing on Saturday. Membership

and Modern President’s Breakfast: 1/1/11 and
1/8/11 Until
about a decade ago, the President’s Breakfast was held at the home
of the new president on January 1. This year we will return to that
tradition because Rutgers Church will be closed on Saturday,
January 1st. Megan Jenkins and her lovely first lady, Blossom
Coryat, will host the fun run at their home: 1960 Madison Avenue,
Apt. 3 between 125th and 126th Streets. Bag drop starts at 9:30
AM, maps of the area and various fun runs will be provided, and
brunch afterward will include from-scratch buttermilk pancakes,
scrambled eggs, breakfast meats, bagels, and coffee, tea, juice,
and Gatorade. RSVPs not required, but are encouraged: mbjenkins@gmail.com. On
Saturday, January 8, 2011, the club will hold the more modern
tradition of President’s Breakfast at Rutgers after the fun run. This special breakfast
is free to membership. FRNY

wetsuits. Please email multisport@frny.org for more information on
this,

Gift Basket Time -- This Sat! With
your turkey/tofurkey basting away, it’s time (already!) to turn our
thoughts to the FRNY Holiday Gift Baskets! Following a year of
successful partnership with AIDS Service Center New York, we will
be providing this wonderful organization with gift packages to
distribute at their holiday party in December. In particular, ASC
is looking for adult sized cold-weather gear, including hats,
gloves, scarves, and warm-pullovers. FRNY will be donating gear,
but feel free to buy an extra set of gloves or hat - the more, the
better! We will gather as a group beginning at 9:00am at the Fun Run on
December 11th to wrap packages for ASC. If you have any questions,
please contact Les James (les.james0209@gmail.com) or Tom Ward (tpward29@gmail.com).
As
an added bonus, Sharen Duke the Executive Director of ASC will be
joining our fun run on this day and will discuss the mission of the
organization as our December speaker of the month. Don’t miss
it! FRNY
Women’s Holiday Party - Dec 11th
We hope that you’ll come out to a celebration of our women’s team
this Saturday -- Dec 11th -- at 6 PM at the home of Megan Jenkins
and Blossom Coryat (1960 Madison Ave., #3 -- between 125th and
126th St.). The evening promises to include delicious food,
gorgeous desserts, themed cocktails, good spirits and a cheery
toast of all the women’s accomplishments this year. Please find
other details including RSVP info at http://www.pingg.com/rsvp/5k2gs87kvfzjnpzcd -or email Sandi at women@frny.org. Weekly
Race Report Braving the cold
and wind, getting their asses out of bed early on a Sunday morning,
and blazing through Central Park, congratulations to the 60
spectacular FRNY men and women who participated in the Joe
Kleinerman 10k, the final NYRR team points race for
2010! Our
sexy, speedy Super Veteran men (60+) topped the men’s team with an
astounding 3rd place finish overall thanks to dashing David Pitches
(44:44), potent Paul Racine (50:40) and strapping Steve McLure

(55:05). Magnificent
men of the Veterans team (50+) notched a fantastic 9th place finish
on their FRNY points-post led by Patrick Guilfoyle (41:58), Michael
McMahon (43:24) and David Pitches (a double scorer!). The intoxicating mix of
Christopher Stoia (38:28), Patrick
Guilfoyle (a double scorer!) and Michael Benjamin (42:33) burned
their way to a 10th place finish for our Men’s Masters team
(40+). Leading the pack for the 10k was the stealth crew of Gabe
Benroth (35:50 PR!), Joshua Korth (36:09 PR!), Chris Fisher
(36:11), Christopher Stoia (a double scorer!) and Jeremy Reiss
(40:57) who combined forces for a thrilling 10th place finish
overall in the Men’s Open Division. Tsing Cheng (47:22) ran his
first 10k ever and naturally achieved a personal record. Superb
job Tsing, keep racing! The scintillating, swift women of the Master’s Team (40+)
earned a rousing 12th place finish due to the efforts of jammin’
Jennifer Ishii (51:17), marvelous Michele Mazzara (52:38 PR!) and
shimmering Sharon Abbott (54:35). Rapid rabbits who tore through
the park leading the Women’s Open Division to an exceptional lucky
13th place finish were Barbara Finnegan (42:18), Rachel Kliegman
(47:30), Alison McKenna (50:02 PR!), Rachel Hitchcock (50:50) and
Jennifer Ishii (a double scorer!). Breath taking Beth Strickland competed in her first
NYRR race,
proudly wearing the Front Runner jersey and nearly achieving a
personal record. Beth reports that she, " ...feel(s) so blessed
and lucky to be part of such an amazing group as FRNY!" The brazen broads of Front
Runners strutted their stuff by
hammering home personal records by the handful. One racer reports
that the hot times might be due to the desire to get out of the
frigging cold. Anyway you like it ladies, you smoked the course
and achieved some stunning personal records. (Note for you math
dorks: 25%, yes, one fourth of the women out there achieved new PRs
at Joe K - Wow!) Phenomenal job Alison Casillo (55:33 PR!), Mi Puchon (54:41
PR!) and AJ Stachelek (59:47 PR!) who seared about 6 minutes off
her last 10k. AJ is grateful to Front Runners, she reports, "I
don’t think this could have happened without this group!" Sarah "double PR" Wheeler also
slashed and burned 6 minutes off her
10k time (55:31) this Sunday. She must have been inspired by her
remarkable "fastest 5k ever" (25:30) that she ran down in her
hometown Turkey Trot in Virginia on 11/25. Superbly done! A hoot and howl goes to Martha
Marina Dao who shredded almost
10 minutes off her last 10k from July, chopping a minute and a half
off of her pace per mile. Martha cheers, "I owe this success to
FRNY!" Many kudos and shout outs are given to the FRNY cheering squad
who defied the freeze to support the team. We had Cesar Jesena
in his zebra-striped snuggy, Linda Paparella with her flaming head
and bad-ass Bernie Janelle with her brass pair were definitely
quite memorable. Louisa, Caroline, Gemma Sanz de la Serna, Donna Checkan, Tara
Amato, Tim Guscott, Rich White, Kelsey Louie and Rob Lennon
were also out there braving the cold to help propel our
peeps. Out of town, we saw some steamy action from Timmy Wilson who ran
the Las Vegas Half Marathon - you know what they say about Vegas
and that’s all we have to say about this race. And finally, we’re pleased to report that
the just-posted
official results of
Prospect Park Track Club’s Turkey Trot confirm another big PR this
year for Ruth Gursky. 1:00:38 is her fastest 5-miler since 1993.
Congratulations, Ruth, and keep on chipping away at those
times! Training Tip
Break
bad habits! Use workouts to help you break old, bad habits. For
example, it you tend to start too fast in your workouts, practice
going out at a more manageable pace during your workouts. If you
tend to lose focus in the middle of your races, pay particular
attention to that phase of your workout. Remember, practice makes
perfect! Buy

Fun Run On
Saturday, December 25, Rutgers
Church will be closed to FRNY. The fun run will still take place,
leaving from the home of Miles Harter (253 West 73 St., Apt. 10,
right across the street from Rutgers) at 10 AM. If you plan to
attend please RSVP to Megan at mbjenkins@gmail.com. Also, please plan to
arrive no earlier than 9:30 AM. Retro
and Modern President’s Breakfast: 1/1/11 and
1/8/11 Until
about a decade ago, the President’s Breakfast was held at the home
of the new president on January 1.

FRNY
Multisport Initiatives Swimming
continues on Monday nights at 8 PM. Sunday
December 19th will be the first winter spin classs. We will ride
from 5 to 7 PM and then have dinner somewhere close by. Those who
RSVP will be guaranteed a bike, however it is not
mandatory. Everyone is encouraged to bring an iPod with a few songs
to share to make the the time go by faster. Location and procedures
are the same as the Monday night swim workouts. (Please see
calendar at www.frny.org for
details.) If you have any questions, or want to RSVP, please
contact multisport@frny.org.
We
are also developing a relationship with a Brooklyn bike shop that
can offer us bike discounts and studio time for winter group rides,
on computrainers. The team has also been extended a special deal on
wetsuits. Please email multisport@frny.org for more information on
this,
to share your upcoming race schedule, or to be added to our
distribution list for weekly workouts. FRNY
Shoe Drive -- Now Through Dec 18th Thank you for continuing to donate your athletic
footwear-your
contributions have made the drive incredibly successful! Gently
worn shoes will be donated to people and "dead" shoes will be
recycled. The organizations we are partnering with are:
Soles4Souls, Nike ReUse A Shoe and one local running organization
still to be determined. A
collection box is available @ Rutger’s Church at each Saturday
morning and Wednesday night Fun Run for the duration of the drive.
The shoe drive is must end on Saturday, Dec 18th and we hope to
collect 200 pairs of shoes-that’s about one pair for approximately
1/3 of our current membership and given how often we replace our
shoes, most of us probably have more than one pair just collecting
dust. For
more information about these organizations or if you have a
recommendation for one based in the NYC area, please contact Sandi
Rowe at women@frny.org. FRNY
Clothing Drive -- Now Through Dec 11th To
continue in the spirit of giving, Front Runners New York will be
collecting gently-used clothing to benefit the Aids Service
Center’s Clothing Bank. The ASC Clothing Bank serves to provide one
of several basic needs to their clients living with HIV/AIDS. Outer
wear and warmer items are especially helpful but all clothing items
are welcome. Clothing should be clean and in good condition, folded
and in a bag. You may leave your clothing donation near the shoe
drive collection box in our closet @ Rutger’s Church. The AIDS
Service Center is also the beneficiary of our holiday gift program
- (gift wrapping date and more details coming
soon). For
more information about the AIDS Service Center, visit http://www.ascnyc.org or
contact Sandi Rowe at women@frny.org. FRNY

Race Report Gobble Gobble! It
was Thanksgiving this past week, and while some of us were stuffing
ourselves with turkey (or Tofurkey, as the case may be), other
die-hard Front Runners were working hard for their meals by running
in Turkey Trots all throughout the country! Two
sets of Front Runners were trotting loops in the boroughs of New

York last week. In Brooklyn, 11 Front Runners ran the Prospect
Park Track Club Turkey Trot 5-Miler. Megan McDavid was the first
female Front Runner finisher with a time of 40:55 (8:11 pace), and
Bernd Erpenbeck was the first male with 34:25 (6:53 pace). Congrats
also to Dave Pitches (34:35, 2nd age), Jill Crouther, Sharon
Abbott, Sandi Rowe, Amy Adams, Rachel Kliegman, Karl Rutter, Beth
Strickland and Ruth Gursky. Well done, everyone! In
Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, two Front Runners ran the First
Annual Thanksgiving Marathon and related races. Running in the full
marathon was Paul Grillot, who completed the difficult four-loop
trail marathon in 4:20:03, coming in 15th place overall! And in
the 10K was Linda Paparella, who finished in 1:00:20. Great job,
folks! You totally earned those finishers’ forks! Down
in Bethesda, Maryland, three Front Runners ran the 28th Annual
Bethesda-Chevy Chase Turkey Chase, the largest road race in
Montgomery County, Maryland. Josh Korth ran the 10K race in a
blazing 36:38 (5:54 pace!), finishing 35th overall out of almost
2000 men! Diane Lowy came in soon afterwards at 56:33 (9:06 pace),
followed by Les James (57:42). Congrats, all! Over
on the west coast, Jerry Buckley ran the Run for the Hungry, a
two-loop 10k course in downtown San Diego. Jerry finished with an
impressive 49:48, earning him second in his age group! Awesome! Down
in North Carolina, Melissa Kelson ran the Cardinal Track Club
Gallop and Gorge 5-Miler in Carrboro, NC. Melissa finished in a
speedy 41:52, and scored a shiny new PR to boot! Amazing job,
Melissa! And
in beautiful (and freezing) Thiensville, Wisconsin, Ali Kliegman
ran the Junior Woman’s Club of Mequon-Thiensville 5k Turkey Trot. Ali reports that while
she personally didn’t PR in the race, her
dog Ennis did! It was his racing debut and he managed to run the
whole thing without stopping to relieve himself. Great running to
both of you! Port
Chester, NY found Stacey Cooper running in the 3.5 mile Tamarack
Tower Foundation Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving (42:03). This
organization provides gifts, grants, and scholarships to the Port
Chester school district through memberships, donations, community
events and fundraisers. Way to race and give back
Stacey! Finally,
on November 21, in Raceway Park, NJ, Eric Patton and Asaf
Rossenheim competed in the Tough Mudder Tri-State race, a 12-mile
course with 19 military-style obstacles with names like the "Fire
Walker," the "Boa Constrictor," and the "Ball Shrinker." Though
the race was untimed, we hear that Eric and Asaf passed many "hot
shirtless guys" on their way to the finish. Excellent! And about
a week later--you guessed it--Eric and Asaf were both in Virginia
to run the Alexandria Turkey Trot, the DC region’s premier
Thanksgiving Day road race. Eric finished in 44:39, and Asaf
finished in 45:00. Wow! What a week of racing, guys!
Congrats! This
just in: a correction was made in the age group results for the Van
Cortland XC race last week. Sam LaFata moved up in the age group
rankings, finishing 4th in the tough course (not 5th as originally
reported). Way to go, Sam! This
Weekend:
This
Sunday at 8am is the NYRR Joe Kleinerman 10K, the last club points
race of the year. If you haven’t registered yet, the race is sold
out, but come on out and cheer on your teammates! The race starts
on East Drive near 101st Street. Good luck, Racers! Training Tip
It is common to feel soreness after
introducing new types/more intense forms of exercise. Delayed
Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) will have you most sore 24-48 hours
after the workout. Warming up, cooling down, and stretching
afterwards are ways to prevent it, but when you increase the
intensity of your workouts, it’s bound to occur. So what to do? Different things work
for different people, but you can try any of
the following: light exercise and then stretching, yoga, rest,
ibuprofen, an ice bath, or alternate between an ice bath and a hot
water bath. Either way, the soreness should diminish as the days go
by after the second day. Continue to run only if you can do so
without changing your stride. Return

Gift Basket Time -- Dec. 11th!
With
your turkey/tofurkey basting away, it’s time (already!) to turn our
thoughts to the FRNY Holiday Gift Baskets!
FRNY will be donating gear,
but feel free to buy an extra set of gloves or hat - the more, the
better! We will be collecting items beginning at the Fun Run on Saturday,
December 4th, with drop-off available also at the Wednesday night
fun run (December 8th). We will gather as a group beginning at
9:00am at the Fun Run on December 11th to wrap packages for ASC. If
you have any questions, please contact Les James (les.james0209@gmail.com) or Tom Ward
(tpward29@gmail.com).
As
an added bonus, Sharen Duke the Executive Director of ASC will be
joining our fun run on this day and will discuss the mission of the
organization as our December speaker of the month. Don’t miss
it! FRNY

D.C. Cherry Blossom 10 Miler/5K Run-Walk Lottery
Begins The
Cherry Blossom 10-miler/5K Run-Walk is April 3, 2011 but the online
lottery is now underway! Here is how the lottery system will work.
Prospective entrants will be able to register for the lottery
during a 10-day period starting at 10 A.M. on Wednesday,
December 1 and extending through 11:59 P.M. on Friday, December
10 on the event website, www.cherryblossom.org. When registering,
prospective entrants will complete and submit the entire entry
form, including the credit card information. However, credit
cards will not be charged unless the applicant is selected.
The entry fees are $37 for the Ten Mile Run and $27 for the 5K
Run-Walk. There will be an approximately $3.00 online entry fee more if you purchase additional items. This is a popular race that
many FRNY members have done in the past. It’s a great out-of-town
event for those looking to broaden their racing
horizons.
FRNY
